Intro & Beta #'s Question (paranoid it's twins)

Hello!  I was a regular on the tri boards during my first pregnancy, but who knows if I'll have time to do much bumping with a 7 month old crawling around!

My question is, what were your beta numbers?  I was at 600 at 17dpo and 1700 at 19dpo.  I am FREAKED that it's twins.  I asked the nurse and she said, "Not necessarily..."  Ummm, what?!  That is not a no!

Anyway, just wanted to see what other ladies have had and whether they're having one or two babies.  I'd be happy and excited about twins, but financially we would really rather have just one healthy baby. :)

Re: Intro & Beta #'s Question (paranoid it's twins)

  • I can't offer any help, because I didn't get my betas done. I have an ultrasound on the 20th though, to check for twins because my mom is an identical and my dad is one of fraternal triplets.

I'm right there with ya about being terrified.

Mine were over 1400 at 18 dpo, and I have 1 healthy DD.  The numbers don't really mean anything as long as they double.
  • mine was 2592 at 19 dpo its a singleton.  Could be a one strong implanter.
  • Welcome back and congrats!! I remember you from the tri boards :)

I'm no help on the betas either. My OB doesn't or didn't do them (at least for me)

  • I don't think that beta numbers can really predict twins.  My numbers are in my siggy if you want to compare.

Just wanted to let you know that your mom being an identical and your dad being a fraternal has no bearing on your chance for multiples. Identicals aren't hereditary and your dad's history won't mean you'll release a extra egg.

I don't mean that to be snarky, just letting you know so you don't freak out too much. :p

  • My beta was 313 at 14dpo and 760 and 16dpo
  • Your beta numbers dont really have any correlation as to whether you are having twins or not.  I didn't have betas taken but a bunch of women on the multiples board did and their numbers were the same as those women who had singletons.

  • My beta at 11 dpo was 255,  assuming it doubles every 48 hours by 15 dpo will be 1,000, and 17 dpo 2,000...I haven't gotten my second beta yet...will hear Monday..but everything I read said it's too early to tell just based on betas....Good Luck with your ultrasound :)

  • With my twin pregnancy (we lost one at 10 weeks) my betas were 680 at 16DPO and 1800 at 18DPO.  That being said, I have seen higher betas result in a singleton pregnancy.  You won't know until you have an u/s.

If you look at betabase you will see that while your range is higher than normal for a singleton pregnancy it is not unheard of.

I was thinking the exact same thing.  I'm wondering why her OB (or whoever ordered the US) doesn't know that...

Exactly this.  Since finding out 6 weeks ago that I am pregnant with twins, I have done a ton of research on twins.  Identical twins are a fluke and are not genetic.  Same thing with it "running through her father".  That can't affect your releasing of multiple eggs.  I don't think a lot of people know much about twins.  I get tired of hearing "my uncles and third cousins are identical twins so it runs in my family."  I guess once you know stuff it gets annoying to hear.

As far as betas, I didn't have them done with my singleton and the only reason I had them done this time was because I had an early miscarriage a couple of months before.  My betas at 17 DPO were 500 and at 19 DPO were 1500.  It crossed my mind, "What if it's twins?" but I read that you can have high betas with one.  When we saw two I did laugh because I had though it.  Like others said, the ultrasound will show you for sure.

  • Beta can't tell you for sure, but mine with the trio were 667 at 14DPO and 1752 at 17DPO. This pregnancy they came back at 364 14DPO, 622 16DPO and 1018 at 18DPO.

Oh and just to let you all know....you CAN get twins from your fathers side. IDs are a fluke that is correct. Frats though are from the mother releasing more than one egg. This can be a genitic gene, if a man has frat twins on his side then he could have gotten that gene. His gene of course can not make his wife drop more eggs but it can be passed to his children, just as all other genes from both sides of the pool are passed.

  • Why would you even begin to think that it is twins.  Your betas aren't even that high.  If it was 6000 at 19DPO, I would say, "maybe" but 1700 is pretty normal.

Here were my betas with DS:  13DPO-42; 16DPO-248; 20DPO-1665.  I was sent in for an u/s at 5w4d because my OB was concerned that my numbers were too low.  1700 at 19DPO shouldn't point to twins, even if you are pregnant with multiples.

Just an FYI, identical multiples are "freaks of nature" as they say.  It has no bearing on the likelihood of you having multiples.
