Variations on Katherine

Hi-

I have never posted here before so I apologize if this has already been asked. Does anyone have any recommendations for variations on Katherine? This was my mother-in-laws name who has passed and we would love to use it. But, my DH and I both do not like "Kathy" and we feel like Katherine is too close to it.  We decided it would be nice to do something close, but maybe not her exact name. Any suggestions are appreciated- thanks!

Re: Variations on Katherine

  • I Love the name Katherine. Plus cute nicknames - Katie, Kate, Kat.

  • My name is Katherine. Variations my family called me included Katie, Kate, Kates (yes, plural), Katrina, and Katelyn. My grandma, who I was named after, went by Kay. I still go by Katie, which people occasionally feel the need to change to Kathy (they get dirty looks for that). I've also been called Katia (kah-tee-uh) by a South American -- I'm not sure where that came from.

I've always loved that there are so many possible variations to my name.

kathy is an older generational name, i wouldn't worry about it. my best friend is named katherine and if anyone tried to shorten it, she would say "that's not my name" so i wouldn't worry about nicknames if you don't want them used [unless your daughter would like to go by one].

  • I completely agree with the pp who said don't worry about her being called Kathy. I know so many Katherines and none of them get called Kathy. Kathy is not a "current" nickname. She will most likely be called Katie or Kate if you don't want her to go by Katherine. I love the name Katherine and don't think it needs a nickname, but Kate is adorable.
  • IMO if you are honoring someone you should not change their name, that really isn't an honor is it?

I know a lot of Katherine's that do not use the nn Kathy, most go by Kate and I know one that just goes by Catherine - no nickname.

  • Well, first of all, I don't think you need to worry about anyone calling a Katherine by "Kathy".  My DD is Katherine and goes by Kate.  People will sometimes call her Katie and once even Kat but nobody has EVER called her Kathy.  If they did I would correct them and move on.  Kathy is very very dated so I don't think most people think of Kathy when they hear Katherine anymore.

    As for variations...

That's not necessarily true. There are many religious and cultural traditions whereby you DO change the name when you are naming someone after a family member.  You might only use the first initial, or you might use a different name that has the same meaning.

Having said that, I don't think I know any Katherine (or variation) under the age of  40 that goes by Kathy. I know a lot of Kates, Katies, Katherines, and even a Katya (which I LOVE).

Karen is also a scandanavian version of Katherine.

  • I love the idea of Kay.
  • Kitty is my favorite.  I know a girl named Katheryn (spelled this way) who goes by Ryn; which I really like a lot!

Other than that, there is of course the over-used and (IMO) overtly-boring diminutive of Katie, the more classic sounding Kate, and the ever-so-popular in the 70's, Kay.

I've also heard Katty (or Caddy/Kaddy), Kat, and Trin (short "i" sound) or Trina (tree-nuh).

My dad calls me Kates all the time!!  My name is Kathryn, and the only time I ever get called Kathy is when my DH is trying to make me mad.  I get Kate, Katie (what I usually go by), Kates, Katrina, Kay (what my mom calls me), KK, and Katia (what my sister calls me).

Honestly, I don't think most people will automatically assume the nn Kathy, and Katherine is a wonderful name, with tons of nn options!!
