do i need a baby monitor?

my house is a 2 bedroom cottage. its sweet and small, perfect for now. but you can hear anything and everything in another room. i've been going back and fourth on the idea of getting a baby monitor. they are awfuly expensive and i dont want to spend the money if it is almost pointless because my house is so small, and i plan on having baby's crib in my room anyway the first few months.

what are your suggestions as mommy to bes?

Re: do i need a baby monitor?

  • I did not get a monitor for this very reason. Not that important in my opinion.

  • LO's room is literally 3 feet away from mine and I'm getting one. It will be helpful so that we can hear the not so loud noises LO makes or for if LO is napping and I go outside for a minute I can always be keeping tabs on him.
  • Our house is a rambler and so we almost decided not to get one, but then we realized that if we are outside at all while LO is napping it may be nice to have. Also our office is downstairs in the basement.    I got one at Target for 40 and it works great!

  • If you are having the baby's crib in your room I would say wait for now. You can always buy one later.

  • Our house is huge and I'm still not getting one. If I feel like I need one after the baby is born I can always get one then. But I'm not going to waste the money now for something I might not use.
  • thank you. i think i'll wait a bit before getting one, maybe once i get a routine going with LO.
  • We live in a 2-bedroom apartment, and LO's bed will be in our room also, but we're getting one. Specifically for when he's napping and we're not in the room with him.  And, when we take him to other peoples' houses and he naps, we can keep an ear on him.

We were in a ~1000 square foot 2br apartment when DD was born. DH wanted to get a video monitor, and I thought it was totally stupid. But he put it on our registry and someone ended up getting it for us.

BEST BABY GIFT EVER. Even if we were just in the next room and could hear her, it was incredibly helpful being able to SEE her. Also, having the monitor allowed me to hear her quiet "I'm waking up, please come get me" sounds before they turned into loud "I'm UP! Come get me NOW!" sounds. And there were times when she was quiet, and it was only by using the video monitor that we could tell that she was NOT actually asleep, just hanging out quietly in her crib. That's important to know, because if she just laid in bed without falling asleep, we knew that when we finally got her up, we needed to be on the lookout for sleepy cues sooner than if she actually napped.

We've also gotten a lot of use out of it, because we still use it daily with her, at almost 3 years of age. We're in a much larger house and it's definitely a necessity at night (our bedroom is on a different floor), but even when we're hanging out in the room right next to her, it's nice to be able to see if she's sleeping, tearing the room up, etc.

Do you NEED a baby monitor? Of course not. But don't think that it's pointless just because you have a small house.

  • We got the video monitor we registered for, and I'm excited about it. As a new mom, I'll take comfort in being able to LO when he's being quiet.  I can see being nervous about too quiet ;)   It also has a talk back feature, but I'm not sure what we'll do with that.

  • i really liked the video monitor with dd and she is the next room
  • When my totally healthy DS was 18 mos. old and napping in his room while I was downstairs, I heard very strange "hiccuping" noises coming over his monitor. I ran up to his room to find him having a seizure (which had never happened before). Called 911, seizure lasted over an hour, we ended up in the hospital for 2 days doing tests. I hadn't always turned on the monitor thinking I'll hear him crying for me when it's time to go get him, and I thank God I had it on that day. I still have a monitor for him and will with the baby as well. You just never know...
  • With my first, I was living a in a house I would describe as you did yours. I got monitors and think I used them a few times. For me, they made sounds and I finally turned them off as I was not getting any sleep using them. I heard DS perfectly well without. I am now in a much larger house and hope to be able to make due without them again. The only time I an see using them is if I am outside in the yard and baby is sleeping.
