Success after IF

Independent Play

How much independent play can your 16-24 month old do?  I feel like my son can't do much- he's obsessed with being read to and generally wants to have an adult on the floor engaging him all the time.  It's been great and I love my time with him but I'm nervous with my twins coming that there will be times when I can't focus on DS and I foresee major tantrums, angst, etc.  I really want to avoid using the tv to keep DS occupied while I manage my twins, as much as I possibly can.

If your child is good at independent play, what do they do and did you do anything to encourage this?  TIA for any advice.

Re: Independent Play

  • Brighton could play independently all day long. He is so good at it. We obviously still play together a lot but when I am working it's really nice.

He has a stool by the window he will stand at and look outside for 30 minutes! He'll have trucks and cars he'll run along the window sill.

He will just play with his toys and "reads" himself books. He has a lot of big trucks that make noise that he pushes around.

He also has a lot of toys with compartments so he pushes them around "collecting" things in the compartments, then puts them all back!

In the morning if I'm not ready to get out of bed he'll watch cartoons for 20 minutes or so while I sleep. That's the only time I use the tv, and it's usually once a week or so but its nice that it works!

Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • I don't know what the key is, but as long as I am in the same room (which is easy, our kitchen / dining room / living space is one giant area, she'll play for hours on her own.  She does come over to show me something from time to time, and I'll talk to her, but she could keep herself entertained for hours.
