What is your nap routine?

How do you get DC down? Ours is as follows, and I think it sucks!

Wait for DD to start tiny fussing while playing. Swaddle and walk. Pat butt and walk. Go outside and walk. All for at least 20 minutes. Put down in carseat/swing/our bed, and pray. This may or may not work. If not, she will wake up in about 1 minute. Repeat. Pray some more. Pray for at least 45 minutes (apparently a sleep cycle for her.). Give up and hold her where she will sleep for hours.

  • Whoa.

We are very lucky - DS gives off pretty clear "I'm tired" signals - red eyes, stares off into space, etc.  If we swaddle him & pop in a pacifier when we notice those signs and then hold him or put him in his swing, he'll be asleep in 5-10 minutes.

  • Wait til the clearest sign he gives me...yawning.  Disinterest and fussest is the next.  Once I see him yawn, give him paci and off to nursery for jiggling and rocking.  usually falls asleep within 5 minutes.  If he does not, then he is not tired.

I was having problems getting him to nap.  I really tried to pay attention to how he acted for a couple of days and tried getting him to nap at different behaviors or signals.  That's when things started to click.

  • Ideally? Swaddle, place in PnP, walk away. Pat belly or stroke eyes if unsettled. Duck out when he's quiet. Come back in 45-60 minutes and pick him up when he's done sleeping. This works about 90% of the time.
