BFing moms...what kind/how many bottles?

DD never took a bottle despite our best efforts (we tried EVERY one on the market).  We returned all of our bottles in the BPA recall, so I don't own a single bottle.

What bottles do you like and how many do I really need?  I plan to EBF, but I'd like to give someone else the opportunity (ie: DH) to feed the baby.

Thanks!

Re: BFing moms...what kind/how many bottles?

  • We have 2 Nubys and 4 Tommee Tippees - all with slow-flow nipples.  Both (especially the nipple) are fairly "natural" in shape, which is why we picked them. I've also heard The First Years Breast Flow bottle is good for BF babies.

The 6 bottles we have are way more than we need.  C gets a bottle once a day, at bedtime.  Actually, we split it into 2 bottles b/c he gets his probiotics at that time, and he doesn't always drink the full amount, so the probiotics get mixed into the first bottle in case he doesn't drink all of the second one.  For us, 4 bottles would probably be plenty.

I think we own 7 now. I bought 3 last week just because I went into the office and forgot to bring bottles for pumping and stopped and bought some. DS isn't much interested in them but does better than DD ever did.

Last time I started with all the fancy brands. This time I decided to start with the cheapo bottles and bought 3 Gerber ones. I have one Dr Brown. And now 3 Nubys. He doesn't really seem to care. For feeding purposes this is probably about 4 bottles too many for us, I think 3 would be plenty since we rarely use them.

We like Dr. Brown's but I also used the Breastflow ones in the beginning.  They worked well but Cooper needs the anti-gas kind.  We have 4, we wash every night and refill.  I wish I'd realized that the narrow necked Dr. Brown's bottles fit onto the pump, I would have bought those instead.
My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!

  • I had 4 play-tex drop in bottles with Aidan and was given a few more so I think our count is up to 7-8; which is better for me because I pump directly into the bottles so I can keep some in the fridge, have others in the freezer setting up and then some out to use. Though it is very rare to have more than 4 in the works because ds doesn't take a bottle very often.

I really like this system because I don't ever have to transfer milk from container to container - just pump straight into the bottle with liner, set up in the fridge or freezer with one of the storage lids on it, once frozen stack on top of one another in a ziplock freezer bag.

  • I started off with the Breastflow and she didn't like them, Avents went better but not great. Finally we settled on the platex drop ins. She took them very well (we only had one.)

Whatever you use, it was recommended to us that we introduce it around 3 weeks. We had no issues with breastfeeding and rrr gave her a bottle maybe once a week.

  • When Mathis was a newbie, the 1st bottles we used were the Adiri nursers. LOVE THEM! they are spendy but we only had 3 and they really helped with the transition from breast to bottle.

After that, i used Avent wide, which is also what i used for T. i tend to think (based on me and several of my friends) that BF babies prefer the wide nipples. not all, but many. i had about 8 of these. i also tried the Think Baby and they were fine but didn't make enough of a difference to justify the price.

After a while, Mathis gave up on the bottle altogether and decided he would rather go without than have silicone. He's a natural kind of guy ;)

  • Avent (not the drop-ins because the refills are too hard to locate): These are our preferred 8-oz-ers. The barrel is shorter and easier to feed from vs. the very tall Playtex.

Playtex 4 oz.: We inherited a bunch of these and used them with the drop-in liners. This was only marginally more convenient than the Avent one, actually. But, we had them and used them.

Number on Hand: We find that 6 of the Avent bottles it the correct number to get us through a day of daycare (4 bottles) and an evening of feedings. We wash everything after the kids go to bed and start again.

  • Dr. Browns. We started #2 on the bottle right away (he was in NICU so had no choice and we just continued) and it has been so nice to have a break, be able to leave for a few hours and not worry about rushing back, etc. If you had problems with Amelia taking a bottle, definitely start this one by a month or so and you should be fine.
  • We use the Avent.  I tried the Playtex Drop-ins the first week or so, but he got pissed.  I think the nipples are hard and he was getting frustrated.  We tried the Avent after that and never looked back.

My theory was to try the 3 popular brands starting with the least expensive (Playtex, Avent, Dr. Browns).  We had 1 set of each to begin with I ended up trading the DB for more Avent.

I have 6 9oz bottles and 1 4oz.  I send 3 each day to school, so I have to wash daily (PITA) and would like more, but they're expensive so I'll just keep washing.

ETA: Cooper was drinking out of a bottle right away and never refused either it or the boob.  Shocking, huh?

  • We used Dr. Brown's.  At first I used the hospital nipples with the Medela pump bottles but eventually switched to Dr. Brown's.  We didn't have any problems.  I gave DS his first bottle when he was a week old and he never refused breast and/or bottle.  I had 12 Dr. Brown's just because DS was a "grazer" and ate 6, 3-4 oz. bottles of BM at the sitter's house.  I had 12 because it was a PITA to wash every night.  (I still washed but didn't have to stay up to wait for the dishwasher to finish before filling for the next day.)  I know your situation will be different so I know you won't need 12!

  • I use Dr. Brown, I just started with these and he seemed to like them so I didn't rock the boat and try others.  I actually have 12 but only because a friend gave me hers and I already had a few.  I love having that many because I don't have to run the dishwasher every day (or handwash which I do as well).
  • DD is not and has never been picky and will drink out of anything with a nipple.  So I just used the Medela bottles.  I could pump right into them and then she would drink from them.  She was taking the breast or the bottle from the beginning with no confusion.
