Babies: 9 - 12 Months

when will you wean the paci?

I was reading an article about how we should "try" to wean the pacifier by 12 months.  That seems a little soon to me.  I'd like to have him off of it before #2 arrives in Nov, so that we don't have paci confusion, but honestly I'm in no rush.

Have you thought about it?  What's your plan?

DS doesn't get it at night but as soon as he's not fussing so much during the day that thing is gone!

  • we did at 8 1/2 months.  I am so glad we did b/c now he sleeps better and does not wake up everytime it comes out of his mouth.  Although he did find one yesterday under the bed.  He was so excited about it and very upset when I took it away.  It took about 5 days when we weaned him.  I think it was harder on us than him.

  • Hopefully by 18 months? If not, she will put it in the trash herself on her 2nd bday. My SIL did this with both her LOs, and it worked.

  • My plan is to have DD off of it during the day by about a year old and let her have it during bed and naptimes until 2. We will see how this goes in the future. She is very attached to it and I can't see myself taking it away from her any earlier.

    THANKS!

  • my pedi said to throw them away at 6 months.  She's smokin crack!
  • DS was never a huge fan of the paci...we stopped giving it to him at 5 months.

  • DD hates pacis except right before bed. We don't let her sleep with one. She basically chews on it like a teether. Our pedi said to chuck it at 6 months too.
  • He seems to be weaning right now on his own.  Today is the first day in 5 days that it's been in his mouth during the day.  We're going to attempt to completely wean after we get settled into our new home (I don't want to take away a comfort object for this big of a transition), so sometime this summer.  My plans was 18 months, but we'll see.
  • I haven't really thought about....I am hoping he gives it  up on his own at some point!  He only takes it for naps and bedtime so I don't see an issue w/ it.
  • I'm not sure.

Ideally I want to wean her down to just naps & bedtime soon, it would be nice to have her completely weaned by the time baby #2 comes though. We'll see how it works out.

  • I did it at nine months while sleep training. I figured I may as well kill two stones with one bird. And he wasn't falling asleep with it then anyways.
