One more birthday question...

We're going to have quite a large party for Sarah, but honestly, the last thing I want is a TON of toys/books/games/puzzles/clothes that I have to find room for.  I want to add "In lieu of gifts, please consider a donation to the March of Dimes in Sarah's honor" to the invitations.  I know that traditional etiquette would say that's tacky, but would YOU think it was tacky if, knowing Sarah's story, you got that invitation?

  • I wouldn't think it was tacky at all!

  • Not tacky at all...actually think it's an awesome idea!

  • I think for birthdays that is totally appropriate.  I would print an insert and include it in the invitation, but not ON the invitation.  And maybe say something like "if you are inclined to give a gift, a donation in Sarah's Honor to the March of Dimes would really touch our hearts"

For wedding invites, then any mention of gifts is tacky.

I think it's totally fine for a birthday gift.  Knowing Sarah's story, I would think people would be more than happy to do something like that.
  • I think it's kind of common now. At least we've seen several invites like that. The last one Nate was invited to ask to bring a bag of dog food to be donated to a local shelter. :o) Be prepared for gifts, too, though. No matter how many times you tell people not to bring one they usually do (along with the donation).

  • I don't think it's tacky at all.
  • I don't know how you would word it but I think that is a wonderful idea.
