Stay at Home Moms

2nd Tri Repost: Paternity Leave

I am a SAHM. We have a 16 month old now and he will be 20 months by the time LO2 arrives.

We are planning to have a water/home birth with a MW and we have been talking about DH taking 1-2 weeks off work to help around until we all get adjusted to the new baby being around. Is that too long/too short time?

Has anyone else had their hubby stay home with them? How did it work?

  • My DH took off 2 weeks with our baby...granted it was just one and I was so happy to have him. I am sure 2 weeks will fly and you will need him w/#2!

I hope your home birth goes well...we are hoping for one with #2...I had DD in a birthing center with midwives and loved it but really want to be home the next time.

  • DS was 27 months when DD was born.  DH took 1 week off and then my mother came for a week.  I didn't feel that I needed any more help than that (or rather, I HATE having people help me;-)  I VBACed DD, so compared to the recovery with DS, it was easy as pie.  It took about 6 weeks to get into a good groove, though.

  • Dh took a week off when I had DS. DH now qualifies for 2 weeks of paternity leave.  We will probably only us 1 week continues week when we have another one.  We use the other 5 days as needed here and there.  DH is job is base+commission.  So the more time off from work he takes the less money he makes.  We would really be hurting money wise if he took 2 weeks off from work.

My husband was home (he travels and when not traveling doesn't really have to go into work) at 37 weeks with my son and then took 3 weeks paid paternity leave and then another week of vacation-a total of 8 weeks. It was awesome. I had an easy birth and recovery and was really able to get back in the swing of things before he started working again. Looking back, I can't even imagine what we did all day since my son was a pretty easy baby.

This time around, he will take 6/7 weeks off depending on when I have the baby. I will definitely need more help this time since I have a young toddler.

DH has 3 weeks of vacation to use up around the time baby is suppose to arrive.  I think we're planning on him taking the first week off completely and then maybe working two days a week for the next couple weeks.  It'll be nice for me to be able to ease into things a little bit slower.  My parents live close by, so they'll help out the first couple weeks when he's working.

DH only took a week, but then went in late every morning for about 2 more weeks. That was really the biggest help ever. The mornings were when I needed more sleep. I also had visits from my mom and my MIL that were also very helpful. I'd say, let him take as much time as he can without breaking the bank or effecting his job.
  • DH took off two weeks when DD came, and another week the next month when his mom and brother visited.  I really needed the help so it worked out well.  I think with a 2nd I might feel a bit more sure of myself, but he's still planning on taking 2 weeks just in case.

  • DH was allowed to have 3 paid paternity days the company gave him because he worked there for over a year. He also had a one week paid vacation saved up so he took both at the same time and with his days off he ended up being home for 2 weeks. It was a bit much for me I think. I think the time in the hospital plus a few extra days would have been enough for me. But given you have another child you may want 2 weeks with him. Check with his company though and make sure he can take the time off... they may even have a paternity policy where he gets paid too.. DH didn't find out about his until 2 weeks before I was due his boss told him.

  • My husband took 4 weeks off. It was our first and it was all paid so he figured why not. It turned out to be VERY good that I had him home. DS had colic and reflux...and had a slew of doctor's appointments in his first month.

With our next baby, if he's still working for the same company, he'll take 4 weeks again.

  • DS was supposed to take two months off - It was all paid except two weeks of it, which he used vacation for - He took those two weeks prior to my due date.

He stopped working around January 15th, with my due date being February 3rd.

I had Jackson Feb 9th.  On March 10th, DH fell and broke his knee/tore his ACL. He's been off ever since and not going back until July.

We're ready to kill each other.  I think 4 to 6 weeks would have been the "perfect" amount of time.  One week is way too short, IMO.  And the first two weeks, for me, were all a confusing, sleepless haze.  4 to 6 weeks.
