White Dots on Baby Gums

My LO has been increasingly fussy, has a cough, clear runny nose, is rejecting the bottle but eating "solids"...  yesterday I noticed a white spot on his gum where one of his top middle teeth will be coming in, and one on his lower gum next to where the middle teeth will be coming in and the gum around it is raised and swollen (no teeth yet) we can see lines in his gums where teeth should be....

MY question... is this teething?

  • Uh oh!  lol

Those are teeth just waiting to pop up and bite you!

  • It could be teething or he's about to cut a tooth.  Could be epstein pearls.  I would have to see it to tell you what it is.  B has had epstein pearls and also has 8 teeth now.  Another thing - him rejecting bottles leads me to believe it COULD be an ear infection.  The act of sucking sounds like it's hurting his ears.  I would call the Pedi and maybe make an appointment.

  • Is it an actual white "spot" or more of a clear/white little protuberance?  B had a couple small white dots and it was just a calcium build up, but I'd think with the other symptoms you listed it's probably teeth!

I really appreciate the title "Epstein Pearls" i looked it up and what was shown in the pictures looks too big and the white dot itself is not swollen on LO as it was in the pictures i saw.  This helps me rule out something at least!  I often wonder about ear infections as we swim a lot, but he is not pulling on his ears at all.  And I read somewhere that if you pull  their ear and they react-it is likely to be an infection,  he is not responsive in any negative way when I try this.  Hmmmm.  Thanks for the info!

  • Could be epstein pearls if they don't seem like teeth.  My LO had and still has those, plus teeth.  When the teeth were coming in, there were openings in his gums where the tooth was going to come up.  That's what I noticed before any white.

  • Sounds like he may have 2 teeth about to pop through.  Of course, about doesn't mean they'll be through tomorrow or anything.  The sucking of the bottle may not feel good which is why he is refusing that but not refusing solid food.  Does he chew the nipple on the bottle?  You could try giving him Children's Tylenol to see if that helps.
