Friday "Green" Poll

In light of recent conversations here - thought this might be fun to brag about your accomplishments, get some new ideas or inspire others to "go green"...

What do you do to be "green"?

What do you want to do but haven't started?

What do you want to do more of?

What is Alabama (your surrounding living area) missing to help you "go green"???

Re: Friday "Green" Poll

  • What do you do to be "green"? We recycle what we can, carpool to work most days, choose organic foods when available (and won't put us in the poor house), turn off lights in rooms we're not in, unplug unused appliances, lamps, etc when not in use, replacing lightbulbs w/ energy saving bulbs (but I do admit I HATE the way they look/light up - so this is a SLOW process for me), dry our clothes on a clothes line in the summer, our appliances are all new, energy star rated appliances

What do you want to do but haven't started? Composting - I am going to make a bin (thanks for the link Rachel!) soon!, Use houseplants to help freshen air inside the house, insulate the garage door

What do you want to do more of?   I always forget the silly reuseable grocery sacks Tongue Tied, use "greener" cleaning products, reduce waste

What is Alabama (your surrounding living area) missing to help you "go green"???  Coming from the NW - the recycling mecca, I long for the days when I could recycle EVERYTHING.  It's ridiculous that the city doesn't pick up glass or corrugated cardboard.

  • What do you do to be "green"?  We recycle cans (well, we give them to DH's uncle since he gets part of his income from selling cans), reuseable shopping bags, turn off lights/make sure things are unplugged (although this is part of my huge fear of fire also), also using the energy saver light bulbs.

What do you want to do but haven't started?  I like the compost bin idea!

What do you want to do more of? Recycling

What is Alabama (your surrounding living area) missing to help you "go green"??? I'm not sure how to go about getting the recycling bins to sit out by the road...but I haven't looked too much into it.

Call your utility company!  I think BFI recycling is the Huntsville Recycle co but your utilities will know - the bin should be free

What do you do to be "green"? reusable grocery bags; recycle; CFL bulbs; buy used (on most things; ie: furniture, cars, kids clothes); in the process of changing out appliances with energy star ones (I know it's not an appliance, but we upgraded our AC unit last year and the savings have been incredible. I couldn't believe how much water we have saved with our energy star washer, either. Def. worth spending the money!); composting (hopefully after this weekend! ;o)); we buy in bulk when we can to reduce on packaging; we have our own garden in the summer and I shop at the farmer's market (in season); turn off lights/appliances when not in use; Meatless Mondays

What do you want to do but haven't started? I want a rain barrel- we use a lot of water in the summer watering plants and adding water to the pool. Green household cleaners! Quit using paper towels. With our house being 60 years old there are a lot of areas we can make our home more efficient-slow process!

What do you want to do more of? I wish I could do better buying used. Especially clothes for myself...that's one of those things I don't know if I will ever be great on. I also wish I was better at buying cleaner makeup and hygiene products. We need to do better with buying better food-not necessarily more organic...our problem is the crappy processed stuff we eat. :o(

What is Alabama (your surrounding living area) missing to help you "go green"??? I agree...I think you should be able to recycle glass and other items! I also wish our city had sidewalks! We are in walking distance of a grocery store, a couple of restaurants, and a few stores. I'd love to be able to walk to these places without getting ran over. Unless you are right downtown our area is not pedestrian friendly! I also wish there were more incentives to live a green lifestyle. I think the tax credits should be extended and increased for replacing old items with more energy efficient ones. Although this isn't regional, I think eating 'clean' and healthy should not be more expensive. I think somehow/someway there should be incentives from the government for companies/farmers to provide all around better food. Does that make sense? lol...guess I got on my soapbox. ;)

What do you do to be "green"? Use resusable grocery bags, however we still get the plastic every once in awhile for picking up after the dog. We recycyle but since they don't have bins where I live (in the county) I take my recycling to work.

What do you want to do but haven't started? composting, I have to go find that post.

What do you want to do more of?  get my husband to start turning off more lights and remember to uplug when not using them.

What is Alabama (your surrounding living area) missing to help you "go green"???  I wish HSV and Madison would put in more bike paths, I would definitely ride my bike to work, grocery store and other places.

  • What do you do to be "green"?  We recycle paper/plastic thru the city.  And when I remember, I have great reusable shopping bags.  We also cloth diaper the majority of the time.

What do you want to do but haven't started?  I'd love to compost, but we simply don't have the room here.  I could just imagine what my dogs would do to a compost heap...gah!  I'd also like to set up some rain barrels but again, we're limited on space.

What do you want to do more of?  I'd like to cloth diaper 100% of the time...I need to just stop buying disposables and force myself to do it.  But with DD likely starting daycare soon, I'm not sure I can convice them to get on board.

What is Alabama (your surrounding living area) missing to help you "go green"???  A daycare that will readily take on cloth diapering...or at least one that didn't look at me like I'd lost my mind when I mention it.  And a recycling program that will accept glass, etc.
