anyone with pitted edema?

Just wondering if anyone else has pitted edema (but BP and urine is fine).  My question is- what have you been told to do/not to do.   I am finding it pretty annoying because my ankles are always swollen (even first thing in the morning).

From what I have read it sounds like I should either be laying down (on my left or walking to increase circulation) but sitting is not so great!  I ussually walk to work (4km each way) and then sit at a desk all day.  DH thinks I shouldn't be working... and that I am suppose to stay off my feet- but that seems a little extreem.  I think I should be doing more exercise (yoga/walking etc.) and less sitting...

thoughts?

I was told to lay down on my left side.  I've been wearing compression stockings the last couple days and the swelling is almost completely gone!!!

One of the doctors stole me a few pairs at the hospital when I went for a checkup.  But apparently you can get them pretty cheap at walgreens/CVS.  The ones I got say "anti-embolism" stockings and I feel like an old lady when I wear them, but it's so worth it!!!

  • Compression socks helped me until it got too damn hot to wear them!  Now I just try to vary my activity during the day.  I sit most of the day too, but I try to get up and walk around every 30 mins or so.  Also, try to keep your feet up on a stool or box or something at work.  I usually lay down on my left side when I get home, or on the couch with my legs propped up on pillows.  My bp is borderline high, but no protein.

I have a condition called May-Thurner syndrom which causes pitting edema in my leg even when I'm not pregnant.

Laying on your left side is a good idea, and when you are in your chair try propping your leg up on something to increase blood flow.

    I use  Jobst-hose.

You can get them at medical supply and therapy stores.

While pitted edema is common in pregnant women it's still important to watch for signs of a DVT which can be life threatening.

Patients should seek treatment for symptoms, including swelling, pain or tenderness in the leg, feeling of increased warmth in the leg, redness or discoloration of the skin, or enlargement of the veins in the leg.

  • They just told me to drink lots of water (over 8 glasses) and put my feet up under my desk. I just found a supply box and put it under my desk to put my feet up.

  • The only thing that has really helped mine is the swimming pool.  I was taken off of work and put on bed rest and even laying on my side with my feet propped up above my heart did nothing for me. As soon as I was able to start getting in the pool it drastically helped.  I actually saw an ankle bone yesterday! My Dr said that it is due to the lower gravity from the water, so just soaking your feet won't do it.  I need to get my entire belly underwater for it to help.  Good luck!!!
