2nd pregnancy/chorioamnionitis/what was your prenatal care like?

I had DS at 33 weeks (in 2008) after a very healthy and uneventful pregnancy, until the very end this is. I was not at risk for anything, I'm healthy, young, etc. So my OBGYN never did an internal exam, just kept putting it off saying there was no need. Then I went into labor due to chorioamnionitis (infection of the uterus due to my 4 cm dilated cervix). He later said that my cervix could have been open a bit throughout my entire pregnancy or maybe just the last few weeks, and that was why I ended up with the infection most likely. Also, after the week of hospital bedrest right before delivery, I ended up with an abrupted placenta. My OBGYN didn't end up delivering DS, another doc that was on call did but my original doc did my hospital pre and post delivery care.

At my 6 week checkup, he was talking about my rupture of membranes being the reason DS came early, SO not right though (they had to break my water during delivery), so we figured the paperwork got mixed up with another patient, although he had no recollection of my hospital stay at ALL. I work for the hospital I delivered at, and this doc is really, really good at what he does and does a majority of the high risk obstetrics in our area, so I don't want to make a mountain out of a molehil.

I am about 6 weeks along right now, and will first see my doctor around 11-12 weeks. Is that normal to wait so long? When did you first see your doc the second time around? Was your prenatal care any different (and why did DC #1 come early?) Any other moms out there who delivered early due to chorioamnionitis? Did the doc state if it was likely to  happen again? Was your prenatal care any different this time around?

Sorry for the novel, I'm just nervous this time around more than last, and this forgetful/easygoing doc isn't helping. I've got my fingers crossed for a nice plump 40 weeker!

  • My situation was obviously different than yours but (1) I am sure I'd likely see a different doctor if I were in your shoes and (2) my doc told me the next time I get pregnant to see her right away, she wants to monitor me the entire pregnancy from the get go until the end on an every other week basis.  I would think they'd want to see you now due to the fact that you had issues with your cervix.

  • My story is also different then yours but my doctor who I really liked got very careless towards the middle of my pregnancy.  I work full time in the city which was about an hour away from my doctors office so I would always make the last appointment of the day and was always rushed through the appointment.  I had serve swelling starting around 15 weeks which I was always concerned about but the doctor never seemed to be worried about it.  At my week 28 check up they didn't test my urine which they normaly do at every appointment and did a a sketchy blood pressure check and two days later I was in the emergency room with blood pressure through the roof. I delivered an hour after being at the hospital.  To this day I still think my doctor rushed me out the door to quickly.  I could never go back to that doctor because I would always feel like they are missing signs.  If you don't feel completly confident in the doctor I would find someone you can trust. Good luck

  • I'm curious how your second pregnancy was? I had pretty much the same story. Very uneventful, healthy pregnancy- no issues or concerns ..but at 28weeks had back pains ...called on-call dr they had me go in and I was having contractions very close together..checked me and I was 2cm dilated ..they tried everything to stop labor but my body wasn't going to stop therefore I delivered 24hrs later. Dr never was very clear but said diagnosis was chorio but infection did not go to fluid or baby ..they also said they didn't know what happened first(infection then dilation or vice versa) anyways we want to have another baby but I am terrified!!!! My son will be 2 this month and he's perfectly heathly I just couldn't imagine going through that again especially so early. It was a traumatic experience and I feel like I will be a lunatic when I'm pregnant again. I don't know what to expect or do or how to not be in constant fear something bad will happen again.
  • Ok here's my story. I'm in a similar situation. With my first pregnancy, I was completely normal, not high risk or anything, healthy, young, etc. my water broke at 30 weeks (at the time, I didn't know why) and I delivered at 31 weeks. Now, this was 3 years ago and I had asked my regular obgyn several times about why I gave birth early and they have brushed it off saying "it happens".. Found out I'm pregnant again a few weeks ago and my regular doctors brought me in at 9 weeks instead of the regular 12 weeks. I decided I would rather go to a high risk doctor so I had a consult with them. They took one glance at my files and said I had chorioamnionitis with my first pregnancy. I am upset my other doctors never told me, and I don't ever plan on returning (other reasons as well, but that's a whole different story..) anyways, I'm currently 15 weeks pregnant and with my high risk doctor, I will be getting an internal sonogram every 2 weeks until week 24 I believe. That will be to measure my cervix because they said i could have gotten an infection due to my cervix shortening or opening. If it does shorten or open, they said I would probably need a cerclage. Hope your pregnancy goes well. Also hoping mine does, because I want nothing more than a full term, healthy baby <3
