I thought you ladies might be able to help me. My DD was failure to thrive, so I have been down this road, but DS is now FFT. He doesn't like any of the foods that worked with DD.
If your child was FFT, what foods did he/she like that were high in calories? He does get milk with carnation instant breakfast, but other than that, he mostly only likes goldfish and cherrios outside of a few fruits and veggies.
Thank you!
Re: Failure to Thrive, food question
Don't laugh at me, but when M won't eat.... I go right to wendy's for a burger, mickey d's for a burger or chicken nuggets. White castle burgers work too.
She's never been diagnosed with failure to thrive, but she's always been tiny & really picky.
She'll eat most things now, but in her younger months, I just gave her whatever she'd eat. Try the above, try dips for him to put his veggies in, dips are great for meats too, avocados have great fats, put melted butter on his veggies, pizza has always been a big hit, mashed potatoes loaded with sour cream, butter, parmesan cheese & heavy cream (i can give you my recipe).
She's also a fan of anything messy. Good luck!
My son was never dx FTT, but I relate to the issues, b/c he is so small and hardly eats (we are now up to the 7% on the weight chart, great since he had been a 2%)
I do the carnation (pedisure is just too $$, plus I can get a few more proteins into w/ the milk+plus carnation) We have to use lactose free milk. I often will blend 1/4 an avocado w/ the milk and carnation. sometimes I'll do both avocado and peanut butter or just peanut butter using the chocolate carnation of course to make a Reese butter cup kind of taste.
of course I try and get as much cheese as I can into him (the allergist wants him on high protein diet b/c his immune system was low and she said that proteins are the building blocks of your immune system - she said don't worry about a veggie, get proteins into him)
I add butter to his foods of course and my fav is when I can add butter, Parmesan cheese and chicken ( i put the chicken into the food processor so it's the size of the parmesan cheese bits) to his mac n' cheese. I know some moms do ice cream, we can't due to The lactose issues, I am just lucky he can tolerate the cheese!
I would love it if he could handle cream cheese, but no such luck and I am not sure about dressings such as ranch yet, but that would be a great thing so him to dip his food into to get extra cals and fat. If your lil one is willing I woul dtry and get cheese dip, dressing dips, all kinds of dips for the veggies he is already eating. I think you can even use yogurt to dip fruits, I once even added carnation to plain full fat yogurt, it did not go over to well b/c he want to eat yogurt out of the lil prepackaged cups, he can't have too much yogurt (the lactose) so it a PITA to waste so much yogurt and carnation, ( I have a hard time finding full fat yogurt unless it's in BIG containers)
There is a FTT board on babycenter (sorry can't link while I am at work) that is great.
I hope some of this helps

My daughter is on a feeding tube because she also doesn't eat enough on her own. She's very particular and usually will only eat crunchy snacks (goldfish, dried cereal, graham cracker, etc.).
She gets Pediasure in through her feeding tube, which we are trying out different flavors so that she will drink it out of her cup and avoid the feeding tube all together.
But for now, the feeding tube has really saved her. It's not something I was excited about, but it's keeping her growing and healthy.
avocado - both of my kids eat it straight, but if they won't we add a little banana and that works well.
we did the milk and CIB as well.
Egg yolks.
our doc even said to add butter to some things that our son was eating
(our son was not FTT but did still fall off the weight charts a few times)
Hi there -
my ds2 is was also recently dx as failure to thrive and won't drink anything but water so getting extra calories into him has been hard! We have found that he will eat a few bits of hot dogs and tofutti cuties (a soy based icecream sandwich). Other than that he likes hard crunchy snack foods which don't offer enough calories/fat or protien. What about trying pedisure (any flavor) if he is willing to drink milk? Or maybe a milkshake? I am checking the food suggestions on here as well! good luck.
