Parenting after a Loss

Something I'M eating giving him gas?

My poor baby. He wakes up during every single nap/sleep period and screams over gas/poop pain. I feel so bad for him. Mylicon didn't work, so I'm wondering if there's something I'M eating that's giving him gas? Any ideas on what I should try cutting out? I'm going to google and call the pedi today too...

  • For me it was beans.  I tried cutting out dairy and caffeine, but didn't notice a difference.  Then one day I decided to cut out beans, and it made a world of difference.  Also Broccoli can cause some major gas too. GL!

  • My normally mellow baby had 3-4 days of screaming & crying due to gas.  By process of elimination (& help from this board) I figured out kidney beans & broccoli were the culprits.  I stopped eating them & he hasn't had any problems since.

  • For me, onion, garlic, spicy things, pizza/spagetti sauce, and broccoli.  I never thought I would need to be more careful about what I ate while BF than I was while pregnant!
  • Well, I haven't been eating broccoli, nor caffeine. I have had beans though. I guess I'll try that first. Thanks!

  • For me it was onion.  But his sensitivity to it has lessoned once he started eating solids.

  • Thanks ladies! How long had you eliminated these things from your diet before you noticed a difference? Should I try eliminating several things at once, then reintroduce them one-by-one, or eliminate them one-by-one and for how long?

  • My DD had serious colic until she was 2.5 months old.  I now really wish that I had cut out dairy back then - knowing now just how allergic she is to it, I think that it would have helped her a lot.  According to all the docs we've seen, dairy and/or soy are usually the culprits when a child has a food allergy or sensitivity.

It can take up to two weeks for the diet elimination to take effect, so keep that in mind if you go that route.  Also, you should only eliminate one thing at a time, otherwise, you won't be able to tell what helped and what didn't.  Good luck - I hope you figure it out!

  • Thanks! I'll elliminate dairy, starting now, and see how that goes for 2 weeks. I guess that means the milk I've been pumping is probably no good too, huh? :(

  • Save it - you never know.  Maybe the dairy won't be an issue, or maybe he'll grow out of the colic soon.  Although I will say that I about cried when DD's eczema flared up after I'd gotten it under control - all because I gave her some milk I'd pumped while still eating some of the bad stuff.
