daycare interview questions

I might have to put J in daycare when he turns two (he is currently with a nanny)
What specific questions did you ask when you visited daycares? Anything to look out for? What do you like or dislike about your daycare?

Thanks everyone :)

Re: daycare interview questions

  • i followed a checklist mostly like this one:

also, i made sure i had 6 eyes the day i went. i looked at all the surroundings, how difficult it was to get into the children's area, i overlooked the staff, cleanliness etc......make sure you go at times that they do not expect you. in fact don't bother even calling them to go check them out!

  • I really don't know but I just searched online and I found some that I think might be helpful:

    - what is policy regarding sick kids?

    -what is discipline policy?

-Is there an after-care charge if I'm late to pick up my child?

-What are security and safety policies?

-Will you provide any food to my child?

    -toddler to staff ratio?

  • How long have the teachers been working there?  What is the student/teacher ratio?  Are they all certified through DCF?  CPR?  What are the ages of the other children in the room?  Do you have a curriculum? Daily routines schedule?  Daily reports for the parents?  Does tuition include food?  Security?  Cameras?

Look for cleanliness, speak with the teachers, is everything organized, toys, books, furniture in good condition.  Even the smell - I visited a daycare that smelled like cat and when I asked the director she swore up and down there were no cats.

I love both of daycares.  The best thing are the teachers.  Both of Chelsea's teachers took care of Eli since he was 6 months old.  They are professional, intelligent, great communicators, and most of all, love my kids and vise versa.  They take great pride in their profession and it shows.  WE also have webcams so I can sneak a peak from time to time.  I really can't think of anything that I dislike about either.  GL and follow your mother's instinct.

Edit: Just thought of one dislike...the playground areas do not have any shade.   They are supposed to plant some more trees some time this month so hopefully that will be better for the children.

I used to do play therapy at day care centers and unfortunately I've seen some awful things.  Try to go when they aren't expecting you so they don't have time to move the problem children around, ask about class size, ratios and teachers certifications as well as the suggestions made above.  Hope that helps!
