Postpartum Depression

I want to help.

A friend of mine had her baby right around the same time as me. She has been suffering from PPdepress VERY bad. She has to leave work at least once a week because she cannot funtion. She is contiuing to deal with her doctors and support groups. I feel so bad for her and wish there is something I can do to help. From what I understand, it is a chemical imbalance (I have suffered from regular depression in the past, so I'm pretty familiar). Anyway, any suggestions as to how I can help her? I've suggested her jogging with me, we've tried lunches, talking things out, just talking BS, etc. Thoughts???????? TIA

I think what you're doing is fine - you're offering your ears and your time! I know in the beginning, I didn't really want to see friends, but it was nice when they checked in on me. Maybe offer to baby-sit one night so she and her dh can go out to a nice dinner - that would be a nice gesture.

  • I think the things you've suggested are great! What helped me was keeping busy, getting out of the house, getting sunshine. Basically anything to keep my mind off of the fact that I felt like crap. I also had my mom come stay with me for a week. We didn't really do much, but it did help me feel less alone.

Maybe you could plan a weekly activity together. One of the things you suggested like having lunch together once a week, or going jogging? For some reason having a "planned" weekly event helped me out tremendously. It gave me something to look forward to every week.
