Babies: 9 - 12 Months

BF'ing Moms - what is your 8-9 month old's nursing schedule like?

I feel like I'm doing something wrong during the day.  Her first and last feedings are always consistent (7:30am and 6:30pm, respectively) but throughout the day I still feel like she's nursing on demand.  Is that normal for this age?

If it helps - In total, she nurses 4 times during the day (5 on rare occasions) and wakes up to eat 1-2 times at night.  She gets two meals a day of solids.

  • My DS never nurses at the same time. I wish I could get him on a schedule, but it all depends on when he sleeps (we do eat, play, sleep routine).

he generally nurses every 3 hours but can go shorter or longer. he usually eats 4-5 times during the day and 1-2 at night, like your DD.

he's eating 3 small solid meals, all finger foods.

  • My 9 month olds nurse at wake up, before nap, before nap #2, before bed, and 2-3 times at night.  On top of that I nurse on demand 1-2 times a day and they eat 3 meals, and 1 snack.  They are tiny, too!

DD is similar. I was feeding her every 3 hours no matter what, but recently I decided to go back to feeding on demand to see if she would stretch her feedings out, and she is. So, I wait for her hunger signs, which are usually every 3 - 4 hours. She also wakes up 1 - 2 times per night and gets two meals of solids.

  • First feeding is at around 7am, then he nurses every 3-4 hours until his last feeding at 8pm.  He's still up 3-4x a night to eat as well.

He gets 2 solid meals per day, plus 3 snacks.

  • DD just went from 6 to 5 feedings in the past month. So at 8-9 months she was nursing 6 times per day. She wakes at night but not to feed. All 6 feedings were between 8 am and 8 pm.
  • DD nurses 5 times a day and once during the night.  Her first feeding is around 7am, and then she nurses about every 2-4 hours until her last feeding at 7pm.  She also gets 2 solid meals and a few puffs during the day.

  • We still nurse "on demand" but she has put herself on a pretty predictable schedule.  We nurse at 9am before her first nap, 1pm before her second nap, around 4 and then again pre-bed at 7.  She gets three full meals.   She's still up overnight and is co-sleeping, so we nurse overnight.  I'm not even sure how many times because I'm usually 3/4 asleep and because it varies so much each night.  I'd say she eats from 2 to 5 times overnight.  Once or twice, she has gone through the night without eating at all; I don't know what that was about.
