So I typed this whole thing out the other day and then the nest froze, took me a few days to decide find time to do it again and to just type it in word to be safe J.
Brady Joseph came into the world a little unexpectedly. At my 38 week appointment (3rd time checking my cervix) I was not dilated or effaced at all, so I was totally thinking I?d go full term, if not longer. On that Sunday April 25th, started having some Braxton Hicks, but didn?t think anything of it. I woke up Monday morning at 12:30 a.m. with cramping. I then went downstairs and started realizing that what I was feeling was probably real contractions, not just cramping. Found an online contraction timer and started timing them and quickly realized that I needed to get to the hospital. Called my best friend (who was supposed to have her phone with her at all times!) to come over to watch Grant ? no answer. Plan B was his favorite babysitter, again no answer. I?m starting to freak out so I call one of my employee?s and ask if her college aged daughter can come over and watch Grant, she gets to our house at 3:00 a.m. We are out the door at 3:15, husband gets on the BELTWAY to get to Women?s hospital (IN ERROR) ? I want to strangle him at that point, we live in West Houston and really I-10 to 610 is just fine J. Thank God for Westpark Tollway. I kept telling myself on the car ride if I could just make it to the hospital and get an Epidural I?d survive.
We made it to the hospital at 3:45am. I am dying in pain, and for those of you that haven?t been to Women?s lately, they moved the entrance, and well making an in labor lady walk a freaking mile is not nice (yes I was offered a wheel chair, but last thing I wanted to do was be confined). Took me a few minutes to get down the hall because I had to stop for contractions. Get to L&D they tell me to change, and I think I?m dying, nurse comes in and I?m kneeling on her chair because I?m in so much pain I just don?t know how to climb on the bed. Finally make it on to the bed, literally begging for an epidural, says she needs to check me first. She checks me and says ?Oh Honey you don?t have time for drugs ? do you feel like you need to push?? I started freaking out. I don?t handle pain well, and never in a million years envisioned a drug free delivery. The Dr. rushed into the room and I pushed 1x (head) 2x (shoulders) 3x (out completely). Brady was born at 4:02 a.m. It was not nearly as bad as I had envisioned a drug free labor to be. I did drop the F bomb a few times according to my husband, but I survived. I was somewhat in shock that it all happened so quickly that the first few minutes Brady was out I wasn?t really enjoying the moment with him. Once I calmed down and held the little guy it was all worth it J. We are very much in love and happy to be home with another healthy baby boy. We don?t plan to have any more kiddos, so this was such a bitter sweet experience. I was so happy for pregnancy to be over, but sad to know this is my last newborn.
Here are some takeaways from my experience:
1) Cervix dilation doesn?t mean CRAP, if I ever were to have another baby I don?t even think I?d have them check me.
2) If it?s your second baby, get to the hospital faster than you did with your 1st, your bodies remembers what to do, and apparently is much more efficient!
3) Definitely get to the hospital faster if you have Group B Strep (I wasn?t able to get antibiotics and because of this ended up with Brady in the NICU for a few days) since he tested positive for a bacteria, which was later ruled to just be a contaminant.
4) If you don?t have family in town, have like 5 backup plans for sitters for other children!
Re: Brady Joseph's quick birth story!
Congratulations!! He's gorgeous! As far as your dilation statement goes, I completely agree. I walked around at 5cm for weeks - 1st check at 35 weeks, I was already around 2-3 cm dilated... I had to be induced at 40w3d. Dilation means nothing!

I too delivered my second baby without an epidural because I delivered so darn quickly. I'm glad his birth was uncomplicated and that all is well with you guys!
