Babies on the Brain

Have any of you painted kitchen cabinets?

I really want to paint ours, but DH will not budge about leaving them just as they are.  We can't afford new ones, and even getting new doors would be a waste of money, because ours are really nice and sturdy, but they're just an ugly yellow-ey stain.  I'd really love to have them a creamy off-white/beige...exciting, huh?

  • It is the biggest pain in the ass ever.   And once you start you can't stop.

    Don't do it.

  • I haven't ever tried painting ones that are just stained, but we tried to strip and repaint ours... it was a nightmare.

  • Yes, we painted them white. It was a TON of work but the results were great. We also added some brushed stainless cabinet pulls and it totally transformed the look of our kitchen. I'll try to find pictures later, but I'm holding a sleeping kiddo so I will check out other computer tonight.

Dang it.  My house is all open, think 80's ranch style, kitchen/living/dining practically all in one.  I don't know what to do besides just live with them, I guess.  How bad would they have to be for you to consider painting them?

  • I would rip them out and not have cabinets before I would go through the trouble of painting them.  Seriously.  Just save up and either pay someone else to do it (someone who has the right equipment--multiple employees, several sanders, a paint sprayer) or buy new ones.

DH??  Is that you?  LOL, ok.  I'll drop it for now, because I most definitely don't want to go through the pain of that much work, and in an Alabama summer, no less.  We'll revisit the issue when we get rich.

YES! We started and never finished because it was such a pain and for the longest time we had a few cabinets without doors til we finally just gave up and bought new ones.

We did it just like this too and it looks wonderful!  It is a lot of work but not terrible.  We used Zinner Stain Killer and it works amazing. You don't have to sand/strip the cabinets first.  You put it on (2 coats) and then paint them (we did 2 coat also.)  Lowe's said that stain killer works better than sanding them down anyway. And it's much much eaiser.

I say do it! It will transform your house when done well.:-)

    Baby #3 on the way!
  • Sugarfingers - the "when done well" comment really drives it home for me - and raises a red flag saying don't do it yourself!!

Kdodge - The painted wood is an issue too because the cabinets have a stack of cabinets that are a support thing so there would be more than actually just cabinets and doors to paint.  And all the trim and doors in our living/dining/kitchen is a nice dark stained wood that I like a lot.

Eh..I'm just going to go to Hobby Lobby and buy a mail organizer to make me feel like I re-decorated.

  • I'm in the process of refinishing ours.  The sanding alone is going to drive me insane.  How big is your kitchen?  We have 15 doors and 8 drawer fronts, plus a wine rack and the other side of our bar counter.  I just started yesterday and I'm already wishing that we'd hired someone.
