Re: Surrogacy?

  • I have looked into using a gestational carrier (GS) here in US and in India.

For a gestational carrier (GC), my husband and I would create the embryo with our own genetics using IVF, but transfer the embryo to another woman to carry and deliver.

A traditional surrogate (TS) supplies the egg and uses the husband (or donor sperm).  They can create the embryo via IVF, but its more common via IUI.  Then the surrogate carries and delivers the baby.

Below is a link to a board where the majority of women are in the GC/TS role:  https://www.surromomsonline.com/

  • You'll probably find more info on surrogacy on the infertility or one of the spin off boards.
  • we had a friend that offered to surrogate for us and we found after calling a lawyer that it could be much more expensive and the costs are very unknown because she could get bed ridden you pay for that day care for her children if she is hospitalized or bed ridden pay for her time off work if needed if her insurance or your insurance wont cover it all medical is out of pocket. and so on and so on and my husband decided we did not have the endless finances for the what ifs. of course if its a perfect pg and insurance covers stuff then well it would not be too bad

  • Our good friend have a two week old that was a surrogate.  It was their eggs and sperm, but she carried the baby.  They ended up using her sister as a surrogate.  She had 3 kids, no health issues, and health insurance, so they did not have that cost, but they did have papers drawn up, the cost of implanting the baby, ect.  They also had a lot of travel cost, since they had to go up there every step of the way.  Even without having to pay the cost of the surrogate, it was still close to $25K from what I understand.

They were looking at India before her sister volunteered.  It was very cool to see a mom 3 days before her baby was coming who was coming from playing tennis though :-)
