Yet another BF/Pumping Question -- Bottles

We are going to introduce the bottle (with pumped BM) this weekend so we can start leaving Cason with Dad/grandparents.

I have a really good freezer stash going.  I know that your milk changes as the baby changes so I don't think I want to sit on the frozen milk for months.

My question is should we start bottles using the frozen milk and as I pump just replenish my freezer stash?  Or, give him fresh pumped milk?  I'm thinking I should do "first in/first out" of the freezer and just keep freezing what I pump to keep my freezer stash at a good level.  But then I don't know if I should always try to get him the freshest milk?

Re: Yet another BF/Pumping Question -- Bottles

  • I would give him fresh pumped milk as freezing it takes away some of the immunological properties. You can leave freshly pumped milk in the fridge for 5 days and then transfer to the freezer if it wasn't used. And yes, go with first in, first out for  your freezer stash as needed.

    ditto exactly
  • I did a little of both. If I had a planned outing where I knew I wanted to give DS a bottle I would thaw some but I always kept some fresh in the fridge just in case I didn?t have time to thaw before leaving.  Sorry that wasn't real clear!  When I went back to work was when I really got into my stash and focused on first in, first out.  (went back after 12 weeks)
