3rd Trimester

Too much movement?

Is there such a thing as too much movement?  I swear LO had been squirming and moving non-stop since early this morning.  There has been lots of pushing and stretching.  She normally is quite active with long rest periods between.  Today it is constant!  I feel dumb asking that.... Thoughts?

Re: Too much movement?

  • My little guy has been CRAZY active today too!

annnd, now I have the hiccups. I feel like I am convulsing nonstop lol

  • I've actually noticed that LO's movement is picking up lately too.  I can't imagine it would be anything to be concerned about.  I told my doctor at my last appointment that he's been moving a ton, and she said that's good.

  • Yes, it can be a sign of fetal distress.  I've been told to call if baby moves more or less then normal.

This. I mentioned it to my Dr too and he said the same thing.

while that may be true in a few very rare cases, most of the time, it's just that baby is growing and there is less room to swim around in so you are more apt to feel movement. I asked my Dr about it a few months ago, she told me not to worry.

This.  It is not a sign of fetal distress.  I was told by both my regular OB and high risk doctor that there is no such thing as a baby that is too active.  Activity is always a good thing.  Rest easy!

  • Also, it is kind of douchey to say "yeah, fetal distress, call ASAP"

  • Don't stress about it. I has this a little while ago, 12 hours of non stop movement. Fortunately I had an OB appt that very day, so I got to ask my doctor about it. Baby's heart rate was fine, and both my doc and the nurse said to not worry about too much movement, only to worry about too little movement. If you google too much movement, you'll see links saying it is a sign of fetal distress/cord problems, but my doc said she has never found that to be the case. Sure enough, the next day he was back to moving normally.

Um, no, it totally can be.  I have been told by my regular OB, high risk OB, and the nurse at L&D yesterday that it can be a sign of fetal distress.

It doesn't hurt to call your dr.

  • Everything is probably fine, but I was also told that significantly increased movement can be a sign of fetal distress and I should call if I experienced either a significant increase or decrease in movement.  Honestly if I were you I would call just to be on the safe side...I personally would hate to take advice from any of us here on the bump and then find out that there was in fact something wrong and I didn't call.  Again- I'm sure all is well with your LO and it is just an active day, but if I were you I would still call.

  • Alright, girls...I heard from my OB.  Thank you for all your input!  She said that this isn't worrisome for her at all.   Their rule of thumb is for concern when the baby isn't moving.  She felt that because I've dropped a lot this week that baby girl is working at getting settled into a new position.  I explained that she normally keeps regular "office hours" and her movement is predictable but today has been crazy.  Again, she said not to sweat it that baby is healthy and active.
