BFing moms who made a diet change

We think Anne may have some gas issues so our pedi recommended that I do an elimination diet for a short while to see if it helps.  She told me to cut out dairy, caffeine, chocolate, gas-producing veggies (cabbage, broccoli, etc).  I've been doing some research online and noticed that starches (potatoes, pasta) are also listed as being gas-producing.

Anyway, I know that some of you have done this too.  What modifications did you make?  And can I replace things like soy for dairy?  Or is that just as bad?  It seems that there is some conflicting advice on the interwebs....

Hopefully this will just be temporary; she said that I could start to add things in one at a time if we notice that Annie's tummy is doing better with the modified diet.

TIA!!

Re: BFing moms who made a diet change

  • No advice here, but I'll be doing this soon. My LO is extremely gassy/fussy. She's also got reflux though and was just started on medicine for that. I didn't want to make both changes at once (her medicine and my diet), so I'm going to wait a week or so after she's been on the medicine.

I plan to start with a food journal and document her mood (crying, gassy, etc).

ETA: I also plan to eventually make it to a breastfeeding support group for tips. The problem is that they start in the mornings here and that's usually when I'm trying to catch up on sleep.

I made a diet changes as well...to be honest through we saw no difference.   The only exception was spicy food. I was really frustrated too, as I love all the stuff he told me to avoid.

In the end, it was reflux for my LO and now that she is on Zantac life is dreamy (o.k, it could just be that she is a few weeks older too.)   I have gone back to eating pretty much whatever I want.  I just can't get my Indian and Thai food spicy anymore :-(

  • Thanks.....I've actually read that mom's diet really only helps a small percentage of the time, so we'll see what happens.  So far she is not presenting signs of reflux, but we'll see with time.  Hopefully it's just gas bubbles.  We're also trying mylicon, though I've also read that the jury is out on whether or not it really does anything.

Cynthia, I am with you on the BF support group, and on trying to catch up on sleep in the morning!  Good to hear that it's par for the course.

I gave up dairy.  I didn't try soy - if there was an allergy to dairy they said that soy would be common as well.

I didn't eat caffeine either.  I continued eating chocolate and starch.

I bought ice cream made with coconut milk which is amazzzzing.

    I hope it helps!

  • Kathy, where did you get that ice cream? Is it sold at regular grocery stores?  It sounds great!

It's seriously amazing.  I would have gone nutty without it :-)

I got it at Kroger at 86th & Towne!   I think they have a store finder on the website.  Ryan picked it up for me - he had trouble locating it in the store at first but found it, I think it was in a "special diet" area, not with regular ice cream, but you should ask.

This I gave up dairy, caffeine and eggs for 7.5 months.  I also love the coconut milk ice cream and now they have YOGURT!!!!! They have ice cream sandwiches and everything.  I always got it at whole foods.  Whole foods has a whole dairy free section that I lived it.  It made a huge difference for Evie.  The gas got so much better really quick and was gone within 2 weeks.  She was so bad that every time I would put her in the nursing position she would scream.  It was so sad.  I hope it works for you!

  • We don't have Kroger around, but I will definitely try Whole Foods.  I am glad to hear about the yogurt too -- I usually eat at least 2-3 servings of dairy a day, so I was having a hard time coming up with snacks and meal ideas!  Thanks!

  • Also Earth balance spread is a great dairy free butter alternative.  I used tubs of it.  You can also find that at whole foods.

  • Jocelyn, gas in BF babies can sometimes also be a sign of overactive let down. Just something else to keep in mind if the elimination diet doesn't work for you. Are you working with a LC? GL!

This was Isabella's issue. At first I thought it might be due to my diet.  Letting the milk spray into a burp cloth until it stopped helped a lot.  I also had a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance and block feeding helped with that, and I cut back on dairy a bit.  Both issues caused gas-like symptoms.

My LC was just saying at group last week how ironic it is that dairy and soy are two of the biggest food sensitivities and yet formula is either milk or soy based.  A friend of mine have to eliminate the "Big 8" food sensitivities and she really liked rice milk.  In fact, she still drinks it now even though she's back on a normal diet.  They have ice cream too.  I think the brand is Rice Dream

That's what I used - Rice Dream milk!  It's weird I think but it works!
