Aflac and Pregnancy Leave

So... I got curious and jumped on Aflac's website to see if they would cover pregnancy leave (just a complete shot in the dark) and from what I saw it looks like they will provide 6-8 weeks of compensation because it falls under short term disability.... Just wondering if anyone out there has done this? I haven't talked with an Aflac agent yet so I don't know too much about it.

 Thanks in advance!

Re: Aflac and Pregnancy Leave

  • I had short term disability coverage from my work and it covered me for up to 6 weeks (vaginal delivery), 60% of my salary. if you have a c-section, it was 8 weeks.  Anyway, there are definitely private insurance plans you can purchase that will cover maternity leave.  I believe you need to purchase it before you are pregnant, but you should definitely call and find out! Also, make sure to ask how much of your salary they will cover.  GL!

  • I don't know about Aflac per se, but a lot of disability plans have a 10 month or 1 year rider before they will cover maternity, meaning you would need to purchase it while TTC, and then not get pregnant for 3-6 months after you buy the policy.  So make sure to double check that also.

Best of luck with your TTC!!

This is exactly what I was going to say. AFLAC's is 10 months. I know because I didn't qualify!!

    Good luck.

YEP - exactly!  DH and I had looked into it, and ended up pregnant less than 2 months after our wedding!  Wish we would have signed up before since all my leave will be unpaid!  :o

  • I had a couple of Aflac policies and they paid me a boatload of money! You should sign up right away because you do have to have it for at least 10 months before you can access it. Mine went into effect on Feb 1st and my due date was the 8th. Close call. But I signed up for Short Term Disability which paid me 60% on my pay for 6 weeks. And I also signed up for Hospital Confinement/ Indemnity (they would know the exact name if you called) which pays you for each night you are hospitalized, as well as additional amounts for other procedures done with you are in the hispital. That policy ended up paying me another $2700. I would for sure look in to some extra insurance. There is so way I would have been able to take my three months without it. Good luck! If you are looking for an agent with Aflac I had Bonnie McCreery. She was helpful, but sometimes took a few days to respond to my emails.
  • Thanks everyone! And thanks for the well wishes!  I love that I can post a question and get great answers from people who've already gone through it!

Ditto!  With first DS I only had what I think is called Sickness Indemnity coverage.  They paid $1000 just for being admitted to the hospital and I think $300 for vaginal delivery, and then $50 per night that I stayed in the hospital.  So just for giving birth they paid me $1400.  Then last year when I knew we would be starting to try for a second I signed up for the Short Term Disability.  Once DC#2 is born I will probably cancel both policies and sign up for one that will cover a more broad variety of things.

  • Thanks Ladies! I sighned up today for the Hospital Protection Plan! I'm looking into the short term disability still. My HR person has not gotten back to me yet, but I'll keep bugging her!
