Adoption

All new...

This is all new for us.  We just had this conversation for the first time.  I'm going to make an appt with my gyn-ob for her advice and referral.

For those that picked adoption over sperm donor...  why did you pick adoption?

I'm so overwhelmed by all of this...  do you have any advice for me?  How long does the process take?

TIA

Re: All new...

  • We are new to this as well.  We chose adoption over a sperm donor because the idea of a donor just did not settle well with either one of us.  I am perfectly fine with adopting as opposed to experiencing pregnancy and birth, etc.  I know some women long for that experience but I feel like if the child was not created by me and my husband then I do not need to experience pregnancy.  Adoption is the best choice for us but I know everyones situation is different.  Good Luck!!

  • Welcome!

For us, we always knew we were most likely going to adopt.  IF just led it to happen a bit earlier than planned (we'd figured #2 and possibly #3 may be adopted).

There are so may ways to build a family -and you are right - it's finding out what works best for you.

    Good luck!

  • My husband and I both always planned on adopting, and we are doing so without TTC, so I have no advice on your first question.

With that being said, I wanted to address your feelings of being overwhelmed.  Adoption is like its own universe sometimes, and the best advice I can offer you is to get an introductory book about it (like Adoption for Dummies or The Complete Idiot's Guide to Adoption) and start reading.  Those books will introduce you to the basics, including different types of adoption, some of the most common issues, how to find an agency, and the process.

There are many different types of adoption, and each one has its own requirements, time lines, pros, and cons.  If you decide to pursue this as a way to build your family, you'll first need to decide which type is right for your family, and then the rest will start to unfold.
