HI everyone. My LO just started rolling from his back to his belly, which is great but it also concerns me. He rolled from his tummy to his back at 5 weeks, but he hates tummy time so he doesn't do it very much. Now that he can roll the other direction, he plays on his tummy for a few minutes and then starts crying because I guess he can't roll back over.
The first night he learned how to roll, he decided he wanted to practice in his sleep. At this point we are still swaddling and have the crib bumber on. He rolled over onto his belly and wedged his face up against the bumper and the mattress and was stuck there. I luckily heard him breathing heavy on the monitor and woke up. This was scarry!!
We have since removed the bumper, but then he gets his feet stuck between the slats in the middle of the night. We tried a sleep positioner but he can wiggle his way out of it. I would love suggestions for what to do - swaddle, don't swaddle, how to prevent him rolling over or getting stuck there, etc!
Thanks all!
Re: Rolling over - concerns for sleeping
Our pedi said that once DD can roll from back to belly, we should stop swaddling since it's nearly impossible for them to roll belly to back while swaddled. Not looking forward to this since it's really the only way DD will sleep...
When DS started rolling at night, I took that as a sign that it was time for the swaddle to go.
And as far as appendages getting stuck in the slats - it just happens. Get a breatheable bumper if you've got a habitual "get-stucker".

we are having the same issue. We've stopped swaddling since DS started rolling on his side. He's now figured out how to roll onto his tummy. But he's still really young for both, so he hasn't mastered rolling either way yet. During his nap at daycare I guess he was having trouble turning his head once he ended up on his tummy. So I don't sleep well at night making sure he doesn't end up face-planted in the mattress.
DS also got stuck in the slats the last few nights, I'm thinking about getting a breathable bumper.
