XP: Bipolar psych recs needed!

Hi there ladies
I'm a local home-state (MN) lady who moved away a long while back but I have a 19 year old brother who is in college in the metro area who has severe mental health issues that he's been trying to deal with for years and just isn't getting the right kind of help. He's on the brink of NOT being able to deal at all anymore. He's very anxious to get help but doesn't know where to go. He's been to a myriad of "conselors" but finds them all to be the "just tell me what's going on, I'm here to listen" without any real HELP. He wants someone who is going to push him to WORK on this and get HEALTHIER!

He wants someone who is very well educated and experienced with bipolar/borderline personality disorder and someone who will make him WORK at it.

I know this is a long shot but I thought I'd check with you ladies to see if you have any rec's or direction.

Thanks!

  • I am a pharmaceutical representative and used to call on this psychiatric nurse practitioner. She's very direct. She does medication management but works in a large clinic with a ton of counselors so I am sure if she got to know your brother she could recommend someone that would be approapriate for him.

I spent a lot of time in their waiting room and it seems that they have a lot of younger patients (at least this location which is in uptown). They have several locations in the metro area.

Here is the link to her profile https://www.acp-mn.com/profile_rpulver.php. Thought it was worth a shot. Good Luck. I'm sure it is difficult to try and advocate for someone elses mental health.

  • I am not sure which college he is at, but if he is at the U of MN, they have fantastic services at Boynton and at the University Counseling Center.  I used to work as a counselor at Disability Services there with students with mental health disabilities. They provide referrals also to students who want specialists or someone with more in depth experience with Bipolar. Regardless of the school, as a student, he can receive accommodations in his courses with a diagnosed mental health condition such as Bipolar.

If he isn't at the U, I would still recommend checking  this website out:

    mentalhealth.umn.edu

He can also call this 24 hour crisis line

    Crisis Connection
    612-379-6363
    or
    1-866-379-6363 (toll free)

I hope this is helpful to you. It is fantastic that you are reaching out for him.

  • sorry, one more thing -

With borderline, many counselors recommend DBT therapy (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy). This counseling definitely encourages clients to take control of their life, and it may be something he would want to explore based on what you are saying!

The mental health services at the U really are fantastic.  If he is at the U of M, let me know and I'll send you a PM with some names.

  • It sounds like he needs a DBT group (as mentioned above) or something along the lines of an ARMHS worker.

I used to work for OPTIONS Family and Behavior Services and they provide ARMHS work. (An ARMHS worker basically goes to the client and works with them from 2 to 4+ hours a week on reaching goals by helping them learn to manage -- or get rid of -- their mental health symptoms.)

A "regular therapist" is really only going to do talk-therapy with him and if he's looking for a more hands-on approach, he's going to have to do some big time searching for someone who is comfortable doing that (as most therapists are only 'used to' doing the talk therapy) or joing a group or get an ARMHS worker.

https://www.therapistlocator.net/index.asp  (To search a database for a therapist -- these are Marriage and Family Therapists)

Please feel free to PM me if you'd like more info. I am a therapist and can possibly help you more specifically with more information (or possibly set something up with him). Good luck!
