New Jersey Babies

St. Peters Hospital in New Brunswick

Anyone deliver at St. Peter's?  I wanted to know, as I am looking to plan a vbac for #2 when the time comes.  Also, who was your OB/midwife?  I delivered DD at Centra State in freehold and they are not Vbac friendly.

Re: St. Peters Hospital in New Brunswick

  • check out ican-online.org for great stats on all NJ hospitals.  The Princeton Midwives do VBACS at Princeton Medical Center- they would be your best bet in NJ, IMO.

  • I second the recommendation for checking out ICAN.  Actually, you can get a hold of the NJ ICAN groups on www.icanofnj.com.  There is a form there to submit questions.

My first baby was born by c-section at St Peters and I decided that I couldn't go back.  They will attend VBACs but you have to have a fairly textbook labor.  They are also not particularly  natural birth friendly so there isn't much there to help your labor progress without an epidural.  Of course you can have a VBAC with an epidural!!!  But I think it's a good idea to try to hold off as long as possible and get your labor really moving.  With all the births they do there, they aren't going to let you hang out in L&D forever.   There are no midwives at St Peter's anymore.  I used Brunswick Hills OB/gyn. They are a nice practice and they will attend VBACs but you need to go into labor by 40 weeks (maybe 41 weeks but you may have to push that) and progress fairly quickly once you are at the hospital.  They will also do episiotomities which I'm not a big fan of.

The Princeton Midwives are good and they attend VBACs but they still like things to go fairly textbook.  If you delivered at Centra-State, there may be some closer providers (depending on where you live) like at Monmouth and Jersey Shore.    Definitely don't go back to Centra-State!!!

Seriously though - email ICAN through the ICANofNJ.com site or go on the main ICAN website and email your closest group (which is probably Somerset County).  They can give you some tips!!!  :)

  • St. Peter's is the place to go if you want to feel like a number as opposed to a patient!  See my post about my experience at:  https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/ShowThread.aspx?PostID=35940553#35940553

  • i delivered at st. peter's last monday and had a great experience with the hospital.... maybe that's because i was high risk and hit every department on the 4th floor at least 2x. The construction is done and I had a private room every single night; my doctor induced me and let me labor for 40 hours before doing a csection (and only because my cervix refused to open past 5cm). the nurses and techs were all great and really helped me out, and everyone would ask me how my son was doing which was really nice (he was born 6 weeks early and is in the nicu).  i wouldn't rule them out, but that's just me. if you have any questions, feel free to page me on the nj nest board (i'm on there more frequently)
