How big do these really need to be? I'm 5'3" and I want a bag that can carry everything I need, but some of the bags are huge! I'm trying to find one that I feel like doesn't exist. I read to look for the following: multiple compartments inside and out, insulated bottle pocket/holder, zippered top vs. flap for messenger, microfiber/easy to clean changing pad, seperate pocket for changing pad if possible, wide strap (if messenger), pocket for keys or wallet, washable fabric..and the list goes on and on. I know Eddie Bauer and Diaper dude make bags with a lot of storage compartments but they're all soooo plain....I just can't find one that fits all of these things. Any recs?
All and all what is the most important? Getting a bag that just doesn't fall apart in a couple months?
Re: diaper bag q's
Diaper bags are like purses ... everyone has different likes and dislikes ... they're really a personal decision.
You got the general guidelines right though .... you're looking for something that has lots of pockets for organizing the stuff, something that is easy to clean, and something that won't annoy the crap out of you, lol.
Some people like messanger style bags, others like backpack styles. I personally, like a tote style, with no top flap. I like to be able to get in and out fast, but have the option to zip it up if necessary. I like longer shoulder straps. I like BIG (because I tend to pack everything but the kitchen sink 'just in case').
Chances are, you'll pick something before baby gets here ... use it for a while, and then decide you want something different. Thats what happened to me. And thats ok ... it gives you more variety that way

DH has given up trying to understand why I need so many diaper bags! I seriously have like 5 or 6.
The first one I got at my shower before DS1 came. I never used it...it just wasn't my style. I think I'm going to give it to goodwill soon.
As my needs and # of kids changed and as I learned what I really liked/ disliked in a diaper bag, I bought new ones. As it is, depending on where we're going and what we're doing, I rotate between what diaper bag fits what I need best.
My newest diaper bags don't really look like diaper bags either, so I can use them for overnight bags, etc. in the future.
