waking up wailing

Jamie wakes up from every nap and every morning (and sometimes during the night) with this sudden, huge wail and then just cries his heart out. I thought it was maybe a little phase or teething or something, but it has been going on for a couple of months now. He used to wake up either babbling or maybe fussing but not absolutely devastated which is how he sounds now.

Did anybody else's kiddo start doing this around 8-10 months? What gives? It makes me so sad. And also it seems he has a harder time going back to sleep when he wakes up so upset. So our naps are getting shorter and our mornings are getting earlier... 5:15 = ouch.

Re: waking up wailing

  • Could it be separation anxiety?  I swear we had 2 weeks where L was really clingy and we had some naps like this.

L has also had 2 weeks were he went from waking up at 5:30-6am to 4:00am...no rhyme or reason.  Thankfully he's gone back (mostly) into the 5 oclock hour.

  • oh, and I have no real suggestions other than I'm pretty sure it will pass rather quickly.  We just resorted to giving Liam a small bottle whenever it was as it seemed to be the only thing to really calm him down.  If he was full enough he would go back down.

  • Emmeline used to do this; I don't know that we did anything different, but she doesn't do it anymore, so I think it just went away. I'm there as fast as I can be, and I'll sit next to her until she comes out of whatever makes her cry.  I know at one point we had to let her cry because it was getting bad, and unless she sounded scared, we'd just lay her back down and say, go to sleep. I'm not sure if that's what's needed here, because I swear every napping baby is different. Sorry pearly - that sucks.

  • Madelyn started doing this about then too....and still does. I keep thinking that at some point, she'll wake up and start playing, etc.  I think some of it may be that she can't get out of her crib when she decides it's time to get up.
