4-month wakeful?

How long does it usually last and what did it "look" like with your child?

    Never happened for us.

With DD she was such a crap sleeper that it was a 0-24mo wakeful.

With DS he just sleeps and sleeps and sleeps some more.... although we seem to have entered the I'm-a-grouchy-thing-in-the-evening phase this week.

  • For us, it was more of a growth spurt than anything else.  He started waking more at night hungry.  We upped the amount of formula we put in his bottles during the day, we also started solids (per his pedi), and he started sleeping through the night consistently (knocks on wood).  His "wakeful" lasted less than a week.  Others think it's related to developmental milestones, but for us, I think it was just a growth spurt (which I would think is harder for breastfed babies as mom has to make more milk to accomodate the baby, can't just up his intake like you can with formula).
After 2 years and 6 IUIs, we did it with IVF w/ ICSI!

  • For us it wasn't too bad.  I want to say it lasted about 1 week.  I just remember that DS seemed to do a lot of tossing and turning and would cry a bit.  We would rock him a little and put him back in bed.
  • Unfortunately ours lasted for 3 long months starting almost the day he turned 4 months old.  He started waking a couple times a night and before I knew it we were seeing every hour starting at around 12.  In all honesty I think it started as a wakeful period but turned into a habit.  I was literally a walking zombie at work and the quickest way I could get him to sleep was to pop the boob in his mouth, even if it was for just 2 minutes.  Terrible pattern.....  Anyways, eventually I think he got used to Mommy coming in there feeding him and he kept doing it.  I was too tired to break the cycle and just got lucky when one week he started sleeping more.  We haven't looked back sense!  I hope it is short lived for you!

  • two months for us ... it was one thing on top of another.

And it looked like lots and lots and lots of waking up.  Not needing to eat necessarily (although we always offered) just needing holds and snuggles and help getting back to sleep.

For us...it's off and on for a month so far.  It's basically her waking up crying, but not because she's hungry, it's because she doesn't want to lay down and sleep anymore.  She wants to play and interact with us at 2 am!  Their brain is working overtime during this time of development.  They're learning to socialize a little more and even play with some toys...that's a big milestone.

  • I'm still not positive if Aidan had one - he did have a few nights in a row where he didnt' make it all the way through the night and seems really to play when he did wake up.  I was all set for this crazy wakeful period and then he just started sleeping again.  If it is like Cajun said maybe that was how long it took for me to produce more milk for him.  We didn't start solids for another month so that wasn't the answer for us but it does make sense.
  • It "looks" like a Mom with lots of concealer under her eyes to hide the big purple circles from lack of sleep. LOL. Seriously, though for us it started right before her 5th month. She started STTN aound 8 weeks from 7 to 7.  Around 4.5 mos, she was waking and would only sleep if I was holding her. I broke her of that but now, it's down at 7, up around 2 and again around 4:30-5 and then around 7:30-8:00.  Prior to now, if she woke up, I could give her a paci and some pats on the back, maybe a little rocking and she was good to go.  The last few nights though, she's been REALLY hungry.  I'm considering starting rice cereal and some solids soon to see if this helps (I've read that some people have had success with this method), but need to talk to my pedi first since we've had some weight issues.
  • For us, about a week.  Cooper went from STTN (9p-6a) to waking up at 3-4am and not wanting to go down.
