Etiquette: If Someone Tells You That You Can't Eat Food X...

Yesterday I was describing a pizza topped with bleu cheese and my well-meaning friend (2nd time mom, also in 1st tri) told me that I should stop eating bleu cheese. My response was that I was not giving it up, and changed the subject. But, is there a more polite way to respond? Do I just say thanks and drop it, or say what I said, or do I reason it out with them (bleu cheese heated to bubbling--like on pizza--is fine)?

I am not into passive aggression or game-playing. I want to be polite but polite and direct, when warranted. WDYT?

Re: Etiquette: If Someone Tells You That You Can't Eat Food X...

  • I'm kinda a smartass, so my response would be, "Oh, gee thanks, Doctor So and So for your input".

I think as long as you aren't stuffing your face with something terrible 24/7 you're ok.  And just because someone has children already does not make them the foremost expert on pregnancy.

  • Foods you eat just like what youre going to do to discipline, how youre going to feed and diaper your baby can always be hot button issues. I usually say I feel comfortable continuing to eat food X but thanks for the advice. And then move on if they dont let it go change the subject...

I'd tell her it's fine depending on preperation. She may just not know that and you can save her from depriving herself during her next pregnancy.

  • If it was me, I would probably reason with them why. But I enjoy a good debate.

And dear Lord, please tell me where you can get pizza with bleu cheese on it.

  • I don't have an answer for you, but during my last pregnancy I was staying at my SIL's house and in the morning she told me I couldn't have tea because I would have a m/c. I didn't know how to respond so I didn't have tea. (She's a crazy biitch and I didn't want to deal with her.)

I think people should mind their own business, personally, but I'm bad at confrontation.

Yum! What else do you put on it? Do you use a white sauce or a red? (Sorry you are indulging my food fantasies.)

    Some ideas

With red sauce--things like onions, apples, or wanuts go well. Ooh, or what about marinated beef + bleu cheese.

With white sauce--chicken and bleu cheese sounds so good. Maybe with some artichoke hearts or green or kalamata olives or roasted garlic.

You had me at kalamata olives...good god, I was just thinking about those earlier today. I'm on some sort of olive kick currently, and can't enough of them.

  • I can see how this is annoying, but I guess I would explain why its ok.  She was obviously well meaning and a lot of people don't know about the soft cheese thing.  It is annoying when people assume that you haven't educated yourself.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • I don't see anything wrong with what you said.  You know what is best for you.  I would have said the same thing.
  • My sister does this all the time, but generally not with food. She'll usually tell me it's okay for me to eat or drink something even though I'm pregnant, usually things I don't want to eat regardless of if it could be "safe" or not. I think just saying "I'm not comfortable eating that" or "I am comfortable eating that".

  • You don't have to have etiquette if they do that because they are being overly intrusive into your life and thus breeching etiquette all on their own.
