South Florida Babies

I was looking through the Bump and found this Q&A which we reminded me of your recent post.  It does seem like babies go through a wakeful phase during the 4th month.

Re: Jen (southmiamiwife)

  • Thanks Adri! Yeah, I had heard of the 4 month wakeful period and I thought that might have something to do with it. Sucks :( Luckily I have two cousins who have babies that are 11 months and 3 months older than Emma, so they had kind of warned me about this. From the beginning I tried to not get too attached to any one sleeping pattern...or at least told myself I wouldn't. But it's easier said than done when you think you're in the clear to get at least two chunks of 4 consecutive hours of sleep a night and then it's suddenly taken away :( Everyone and their mom (including Gaby...and his mom...and my mom) is pressuring me to start solids but I'm not convinced it's worth it. It *may* make her sleep longer, but there's a reason that my pediatrician and the AAP recommend exclusively breastfeeding for the first six months. I've done it this long...might as well stick it out 4 more weeks.

Unfortunately the only ones who have been really supportive and haven't looked at me like a crazy person for not starting solids already are my two cousins with the babies because they EBF for the first six months too and they understand where I'm coming from.

  • And looking at her yummy rolls, it appears Emma is well fed on breast milk alone!  Go w/ your instinct.  ; ) GL

Exactly. She is thriving on the breastmilk so I don't find the need to do anything differently until the doctor tells me so. If I saw that she was skinny or hungry, fine. But luckily that's not the case. The only drawback is that a) I have to pump at work, which I hate, but it's part of the sacrifice and b) the fact that she doesn't STTN, which may very well be connected to the fact that she is EBF, but may be due to a bunch of other factors too...you never know.

Oh well. I prefer to stick to my guns and do what I am comfortable with than to give in to everyone's pressure. Like I said, in only 4 short weeks we will for sure be getting the green light to start solids and then at that point we'll see whether it makes a difference with her sleeping patterns or not.

  • For some reason a lot of people have an aversion to BFing - they don't want to know about it, hear about it, see it, etc, like it's a taboo.

Sleeping patterns could be related to what she's eating.  A friend of mind has a 6 month old that has been STTN since she was 2 months old.  However, at around 2 months, her doctor discovered that she had an allergy to milk protein (any kind of milk including breast milk).  The poor girl had been going through a lot for those 2 months.  The doc switched her to a special formula and around that time is when she started to STTN.  Now, they are going to start trying solids and soy milk to see how that goes.

  • I'm late on this post but Jen, you know we waited until 6 months to start solids. I felt a lot of pressure to start earlier also. I'm really glad I was able to wait. And honestly, solids are a major pain. I feel like our weekends (when we spend the most time with him out and about) have to be super planned now. We can't just go out whenever like we used to (and pop out the boob if need be).

As far as solids having an effect on how much they sleep- I'm not too sure. Nico slept terrible from 4-5 months, slept great from 5-6 and at 6 when we started solids, he started waking up at all hours of the night again :/
