Stocking up on diapers

For those of you that are stocking up on diapers before the baby is born, how many of each size are you buying?  I would like to be prepared but don't want to buy too many of one size and then not end up using them.  Is there a way to help determine this that anyone is aware of?

  • As long as the boxes stay unopened you can always return them for another size. :)

  • So far we bought one box each of newborn and size 1.  I'll probably pick up another size 1 and after than stock up on with bigger sizes.  From what I've been told babies grow out of newborn and size 1 pretty quickly.

If you are stocking up on diapers now for money reasons, perhaps you should just buy gift cards for yourself at the store you plan on making your diaper purchases instead.  This way you will not end up with a bunch of diapers you will not use.  It is really hard to predict what you will need & there is no handy formula to figure it out... every baby is different & grows at different rates.

  • I'd be careful doing this and make sure the store has a good return/exchange policy.  We tried a few different brands with DS before finding what we liked.  And even then, we have switched around a few time in the past 2 years.

  • I am going to buy all size 1 because I know at the shower I will get so many newborn diapers. ..but at PP said as long as they are unopened you can exchange for a different size.
  • I havent started on my stash yet. I am using cloth.

This is what I was worried about.  That's a good idea!  I think I will just put away the money/get gift cards and buy the diapers later.  I've just heard of people that have really stocked up and was wondering if there was a fool proof way to do it.  Thanks for the advice!

  • Be forewarned that you can not necessarily return/exchange unopened diapers! Both Target & Baby's R Us have said 'no' to my friend who wanted to exchange, because after a few months they change out the packaging (or something...).

I second the previous post of buying gift cards instead. But if you feel it's absolutely necessary to stock up - I say go for size 3. DS (18 months old) has been in size 3 for at least 4 months (probably more like 6), and he started wearing size 3's to get him through the night by the time he was at least 8 months old (although, it was probably earlier than that). However, if you stock up on size 3's you'll have them sitting around your house for a loooong time.

  • This is actually makes me laugh! My brother actually told me to buy just enough to get you through to the first month. Which makes sense, as babies tend to put on weight!

So if my math is correct and newborns go through about 12 diapers a day multiplied by 31 days at the most, that is  372 diapers in a 31 day span!

At target they have 96 count newborn diapers in bulk meaning that I will buy 4 boxes for now!

Looking back at what I wrote I sound pompous! But Im too lazy to delete it.

  • I have bought 2 boxes of size 1-2, 1 box of size 2 and 1 box of size 3. We will not buy newborn size at all until after baby is born since big babies run in our family and we may not need many of them.

We bought them all from Costco a few months back when they had a great sale going. the boxes of 200 some diapers were all $25 if I remember right. I am not buying anymore though...I think this is an ok start and then we can figure it out once baby is here.

I'm also using cloth. I got some proraps free from a friend and bought 2 other covers so far. Lots of flats but we're planning on using prefolds instead.

  • I bought a big bag of newborn, but will not be buying any more diapers until LO gets here... We live less than 5 minutes from several stores, and with DS he had such a severe allergy to the chemicals in one of the diapers we used that we had to go out to Whole Foods market and buy bags of Seventh Generation!!! Between the one bag of newborn diapers and the diapers that they typically send home with you from the hospital, we should be OK until we figure out which diapers LO can use. We grocery shop every week, so we'll just pick up packs while we're there.

  • I'll probably wait until after my shower.  We have enough family nearby that can run an errand for us if need be.

  • Honestly, I did not stock up with diapers for DD.  I bought a bag of newborn diapers in the brand I thought that I wanted to use.  It turned out that once we were home and tried those diapers, she just leaked right out of them within minutes and we stuck with the Pampers we got in the hospital and have had no issues.  Some babies also have skin reactions to different brand of diapers too. And, all babies grow different, my DD was in NB diapers for 3 months, we just barely moved to size 3 two weeks ago and she is almost 1.  I wouldn't want to have to bother with exchanging diapers, I think getting a gift card would be better.
  • We are trying to stock up. We are getting a few newborn, but mostly size 1. We keep them in the boxes and receipts, incase we need to take them back.

  • Im not going to buy very many newborn size, they outgrow them so fast...so several boxes of size 1 and 2, and maybe a few boxes of bigger diapers that I can keep in our storage closet.
