Cupcakes or sheet cake?

Why am I such a neurotic party planner?

I'm estimating having about 30 people at Dillon's party, mainly adults mostly family.

Are you doing cupcakes or a sheet cake? I'm so scared that if I order a sheetcake that it'll be ugly (I hate sheet cakes) but, if I order cupcakes..I'll spend like $30 in baked goods alone.

Re: Cupcakes or sheet cake?

  • Cupcakes. You don't have to worry about cutting the cake that way. It'll be easier.

  • we are ordering 2 reg round cakes (1 for each girl) from a fab italian bakery and then we are also getting cupcakes...all in all I will have spent about $80 on baked goods which is making me rethink spending $$ on catering too...hmmm...and we are expecting about 25 people....
  • I am making cupcakes, but if you are worried about an ugly sheet cake just order a plain one and decorate yourself that way it is right.

  • I really thought of doing all of the baking myself but, I don't want to add that stress onto doing all of the food and decorating myself.

I know $30 sounds cheap but, in the grand scheme of things..for cupcakes?

I just may do cupcakes though, I don't want to deal with cake cutting anyway!

  • I'm doing both. I'm making a batch or two of cupcakes and buying a sheet cake. I figure the cup cakes could be snacks with dinner then when we cut the cake, everyone gets a piece of the birthday cake. Its not like the extras won't get eaten anyway. :)

  • I'm making cupcakes. It's easier for me. No mess of the cake cutting and passing it out. Everybody can grab a cupcake and go on.
  • I threw a shower for my SIL in the winter and I fell in love with the cake I got. So, I plan on getting a cake from that bakery and cupcakes for the kids. The cake is 30 bucks, so I'm hoping to get the cupcakes from Sam's for a decent price.
  • We are having a little under 70 people (35 adults and 25 children - CRAZY!!!)

We are doing a sheet cake for up to 40 people and then mini cupcakes for the children (and a regular sized cupcake for DS).  I think all in all is will be about $100 for the baked goods!

  • I'm making about 75 cupcakes for around $15.00!

  • Another idea- my friends had a "cupcake sheet cake" for my shower. Cupcakes are arranged and decorated to look like a sheet of cake, but then they just pull apart!

Here is a link to Walmart (Mine was from Sam's), at the bottom you can see the Santa cupcake "cake".

    Super cute idea.

  • I wish I had the mental capacity to do all the baking as well.

  • Cupcakes! And in my opinion homemade ones (even from the box) taste much better than the store bought ones that come with tons of icing. Kids like the Betty Crocker icing better too. I'm a teacher and when I've bought my students (kinder) cupcakes from with the cool whipped icing they don't even touch them.

You can do all the baking the day before and just put the icing that morning!
