Parenting after a Loss

If your baby rolls... & bumper question.

We are still putting our LO down on his back to sleep, but now he has started to roll in his sleep to his tummy. Sometimes he gets his arms or legs stuck outside the crib.

I just "caught him" doing this at the beginning of a nap and flipped him to his back. Luckily he didn't wake up. But now I'm wondering, do you correct your baby when they flip or do you just let them be?  Also, anyone else start to use a bumper around 6 months because of this?

  • I am using a breathable bumper for now because of this.

  • We have a breathable bumper but have never used it.  We used a regular old bumper since day 1.  I'm glad we have that since he rolls around so much, he would probably get parts of him stuck in the crib if we didn't have that there.

  • I've just used the regular bumper since day one! And DD used a bumper all the time too! If he's old enough to roll...he will move if he can't breathe.  I wouuldn't worry about it and just let him be.  If it bothers you...do what makes you reassured.  But....I personally wouldn't worry about it!

  • We had to put a breathable bumper in at about 4.5 months because Sara started getting stuck in the bars. Also I did flip her the first coupkle nights but that got tiring, now I just let her be.
  • DD started to get her legs stuck in the rails a couple weeks ago, and I've been wondering the same thing.  She generally cries when this happens so we go check on her and then fix the problem.  I don't touch her if she is asleep because it's so hard to get her to go down in the first place.  I have been thinking about a bumper but am scared of the suffocation risk.  Then again, my mom used one with me and my four siblings and nothing ever happened to us.  I don't know.
  • About 6 months is when we started using the bumper for this reason, plus he scoots all over the crib and was banging his head into the bars and screaming.  I guess that's why it's called a bumper, lol.
  • we've used a breathable bumper from the get go.
  • I just let her be.  By 6 months, they will be able to move their head if they can't breathe.  And, mine usually sleeps better when she does flip to her tummy.  When we're desperate in the middle of the night and can't get her to calm down (infrequently), I actually put her on her tummy and it usually helps.

We've always had a bumper, since my LO has always been a mover and a shaker in her crib.  Since she was about a month old, we'd find her all turned around in her crib, no matter where we put her when she went down, she wasn't in that position when we went back in.  I would have lots of frustration if we didn't have a bumper, because she pushes off of the side of her crib with her feet to move herself around.  It should be fine.

  • Thanks you- I think I'll be putting on the bumped today. It makes me feel better to know I'm not alone in this. :)

This.  I like the breathable one!

    1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

  • We're going through this right now.  We have a breathable bumper and I anticipate keeping that in there for quite a bit longer (as opposed to the matching one).

We were flipping him back over (we do the opposite...put him to sleep on his tummy...he'd flip to his back).  We have the Angelcare monitor though which is a huge help. DS would not be able to fall asleep on his back so we'd flip him to his belly.

I pulled out the sleep wedge again and used that, but he was flipping to his side even with that.  I finally went cold turkey 3 days ago with nothing!  He's almost done figuring it out (that we won't come in).  It's like CIO all over again.  He is strong enough to flip back and just needs to learn how to do it himself.  He's good now but it took a few days for him to figure it out.  It's taking him 1 hr + to fall asleep at night, but he eventually does.

Yes, we dropped his mattress down one level and put the bumper in once he started rolling. We don't flip him back over unless he cries.

Also, I'm not sure why people are still scared of suffocation at 6+ months old. Babies have a pretty good survival instinct - if they are rolling all over the place, they can certainly lift their head up if they push themselves against the bumper!
