where did your baby sleep when it was born?

someone at work today offered me a bassinet for free and i hadn't really thought about where she'll sleep when we bring her home.  from what i can gather, options are a bassinet, the crib and something like a pack-n-play.  is that right?

side note: does anyone know anything about/have any experience with this bassinet?  link

Re: where did your baby sleep when it was born?

  • Joshua spent the first month of his life on my chest.  Then the next few months he slept in the PNP next to me.

G slept in the PNP for a month then moved upstairs.

  • We used the pack n play. It has a bassinet feature that basically raises the floor up high so you don't have to put the baby all the way down at the bottom of the PNP. I didn't see the need for a bassinet since we had this. One less piece of baby stuff to clutter our house!

The PNP has gone with us out of town several times (as well as to relatives' houses for napping), so I feel like we've gotten our money's worth out of it.

  • He slept for the first week - 10 days in the bassinet of a pnp and then we moved him to his crib in his room.  Our room was too bright and loud for him to really sleep well.

  • For the first 3 weeks DS would only sleep on us, then he spent the past month in the Newborn Napper of the PnP (which is a tiny papasan-like attachment over the bassinet). This past weekend we transitioned him to the bassinet of the PnP.In a few weeks we will move him to his crib.

Currently, we have placed the pad from the napper in the bassinet. Before we did this he wouldn't sleep for more than 15 minutes in the bassinet. Looking back on it, I wouldn't have put him in the Newborn Napper because it is just one more thing to have to transition him from.

I should have realized this when we learned that we didn't have a good sleeper. Some babies will sleep anywhere, but not our little guy.

  • addie slept in a pram we had passed down to us. it was so easy to roll from place to place.

then the swing, then the crib. i have no recollection at what ages any of those transitions happened. i have no idea how you all remember the new born details!

  • DS either slept in his crib or a papasan swing in his room--I feel like I had to stare at the monitor or check him all the time though!  He could not sleep well in the same room as we were (even now he has trouble sleeping with us on vacation, etc.).   We had the pnp bassinet all set up, but it did not work for him, although it was what we had planned.

the pack and play comes with a bassinet thing and changing table.  So both kids were in it for about 2 months and then we moved them to the crib.

  • The pack n play in our room for the first little bit then up to their rooms.  Evan is still having some reflux issues so he sometimes goes into the swing to be more upright if it looks like it is bothering him but that is getting more few and far between now.
  • we co-slept for six months with Marion, then transitioned to the crib.  We'll do the same for this new one.
  • We have an arms reach co-sleeper (similar to a bassinet).  Both slept in that for quite a while though the bed with us was probably used more often (DS slept on me for the first couple months).  When they started pulling themselves up I moved them to their bed.  The bassinet was in our room and the PNP like the others were talking about was downstairs.

  • She went straight to her crib.  I didn't want to have to transition her.

At night, in our room in a cradle my FIL made.  During the day he slept wherever-- couch, swing, arms, bed, it didn't matter.  After a few weeks I started putting him in bed with me at night.  Now he sleeps in the crib in his room but usually comes into bed w/ me around 5am.

  • They both slept in the bassinet portion of a pack n' play next to our bed.

  • We put the PNP in his room for the first 2-3 weeks.  It was easier with my c/s and I hadn't put the sheet saver on the crib since I anticipated him sleeping in the PNP in our room for a while.

Right after Christmas we put him in his crib.

  • At first I tried to get him to sleep in his pnp using a snugglenest.  That worked for awhile until he refused.  After a couple of weeks I moved him to his swing where he slept for at least a month.  We then made a smooth transition to the pnp and eventually the crib.  If I could have taken the rolling hospital baby bed with me I would have!  I think a rolling bassinet (maybe they all roll these days...not sure) would have been great to have!  (I haven't checked out your link...maybe that's what it is.)

Edit: just checked out the link.  If you have room I say go for it!

  • We used a bassinet for the first three months next to the bed.  Then up to the crib he went.

I liked it much better than a PNP.  But then I didn't like the idea of bending over that much to get him out of the PNP after my C-section so we didn't use it.

  • We had the pnp with the newborn napper and he slept in that for the first few weeks, then I freaked out that it was soft and moved him to just the bassinet portion of the pnp.  He didn't sleep well in that at all and moved the newborn napper back and he slept in that until he was about 2 months old.  Then the dr. told us that he would sleep better a little elevated so he slept in his glider (like a bouncy seat but glides instead) until he was 4 months.  We moved him to his crib at 4 months and wish we would have sooner.  He sleeps very well in it.
  • In the PNP at night in our room for the most part. We also had a little rolling bassinet that was great that I used all over the house and it's now at my parents house for when she naps over there.  At 5 mos, I almost have her fully transitioned to her bed, but she still has naps in my room in the PNP a lot.
  • Their cribs.  I totally needed time away from my baby, and going to bed without a baby in the room saved my sanity.

  • At night, she sleeps in the bassinet part of the PNP in our room. She did spend a few nights in her crib when my mom was in town and helping with night time feedings. During the day she sleeps all over - swing, bouncer, arms, and most recently our wonderful Nap Nanny (where she is right now).

We will transition her to her crib in the next two weeks (we said two months in our room) since she's sleeping longer stretches at night. Her room is on the other side of the house from us so I didn't want to trek over there 4-5 times a night. I like having her close so I can change her, nurse, and rock her to sleep without having to leave the room
