What's the need for mattress pads?

I am in the process of registering and am stumped on this one. If a mattress is "waterproof", why do they recommend getting waterproof mattress pad covers? Are they needed? Please enlighten me.

When your precious bundle of joy blows through a diaper, onesie, sheet and it gets on a mattress pad- it is a lot easier to throw that in the washer than to scrub down your mattress. I am with you though, it didn't become as important until our son was sleeping on a twin mattress that wasn't waterproof.

yes they are needed. Like the pp stated, it is easier to throw in the laundry then to scrub down the mattress. I would also recommend getting a waterproof mattress cover for your bed. My water broke in bed in the middle of the night and it was way easier and quicker to clean up then if it was just on the mattress, I was so happy my mom had recommended this the month before I delivered.

Our baby mattress is waterproof and I've had to clean it both with and without a pad - when the pad was on, I just took it off and put in the washer. When DS pucked all over his sheet and there was no pad, the mattress was pretty wet and stinky so I had to wash it with a towel - it didn't take very long but with a sick kid it's much nicer having to just put on a new pad and sheet versus having to clean right then.

Thank you very much ladies. It definitely makes sense now after what you were saying. Sometimes its just hard to envision at first. Also - thats a great idea about having one in MY bed incase my water breaks during the night. Yes

This! My water didn't break but for some reason one night I wet the bed when I was around 33 weeks with DS1 Embarrassed

We don't own a single one and I haven't regretted it. I have bought a few of the changing pad size and one set of the flat flannel waterproof pad that is roughly the size of the play yard (because that mattress isn't waterproof). I don't have any for the crib. The only thing we use in the crib is a sheet on the mattress.

honestly, you will not need this item. If you have a waterproof mattress, then you are good. I would buy a few lap pads and place them under baby when they are sleeping so you can just replace those if there is an accident of some kind. we never had a "blow out" that ruined the sheets or lap pads. I think thats a little exaggerated. It was mostly due to spit-up when we had to change the lap pad.

Please keep in mind too, that the majority (i think its like 80-90%) do not break their water like in the movies. Most either have to have it broken in the hospital or its a slow trickle (which was in my case). I was in bed and did not ruin my sheets. My underwear was a different story. I think if you want to save the money and are worried you will be in that small percentage that has a gush when their water breaks, just put extra sheets or some towels under you when you sleep.

Get three of them, seriously! With my DS I use to layer pad, sheet, pad, sheet, pad, sheet. This way when the diapers blew at 3am and I was way to tired to change the sheets, I just pulled a layer off! It worked like a charm.

I actually use the waterproof pads in DDs crib more for padding. Otherwise it is a thin sheet on top of a plastic covered mattress, not very comfy sounding. And my kid has always been a mover so there's no way a lap pad would have protected enough of the crib.

We have a waterproof mattress pad on our bed. It will come in handy if your have a sick kid that throws up in your bed. Just thinking ahead...

It doesn't feel any different than a regular mattress cover. I can't sleep just sheets over mattress.

I think I have more mattress (and pillow pads) then actual sheets. And I my 3 year old is in a twin bed now and I cover that mattress with pads too. I don't know if it's their plumbing or the diapers I used..but they constantly wet through their to the sheets. It saved the mattresses!!!!
