XP- Crib Mattress Height and other crib ?s

These are probably very dumb questions, but DH and I weren't 100% so I figured I'd ask here.  Our crib offers three positions for the mattress--one closest to the ground, one fairly high about a foot below the top of the crib (only estimating, I didn't take measurements), and one somewhere in the middle.  Am I supposed to use the highest setting when the baby is a newborn?  When do I move the settings down, or is it just based on growth?

My crib also has drawers underneath.  I don't have a bed set and don't plan to use a bumper, I was simply going to buy cute crib sheets.  The problem is that there's a large space between the bottom of the mattress/mattress spring and the drawers, and I think it looks horrible.  Would a crib skirt be used to cover that space?  Are there any other options? I just want to ask before I run to go buy one.

    We had our mattress on the highest position until DD started pulling herself up at around 8 months, then we moved it to the lowest. Some move it down when their LOs start sitting up on their own though.

    I would just use a crib skirt if you wanted to cover that area. You can buy them separately instead of getting a whole set and find one to coordinate with the sheets you pick out.

    When DD was a newborn we had it at the highest setting.  Once she started sitting up around 5 months, I moved it to the lowest.  We never used the in between setting.

    At our daycare we lower the crib setting when they start rolling, although it seems like the mattress is much closer to the top than in my crib at home.  I would guess when they are sitting up would be a good time to move down one, or to the lowest setting.

    I am also not doing a bedding set, but wanted to get a crib to fill the gap.  I've had a hard time finding anything I like though.  I may have to figure out the sewing machine...

    We have four settings, we started out at the highest, moved lower when she started sitting up and then dropped it all the way down when she started standing up.

    We are starting at the 2nd to highest setting this time, because DD can reach in there at the highest.
