2nd Trimester

when did you start buying stuff?

I seriously have no clue when to start looking at/buying big ticket items like furniture and strollers. I know I could do it any time, but it seems so early right now!

Re: when did you start buying stuff?

  • For my son we had ordered furniture that was going to take quite a bit of time to come in at 20 weeks.

The stroller, here's my advice I give to everyone that's prego. Get the snap n go to begin with and then after you have the baby figure out what you want and need in a stroller and get it then.

So many people I know regret what they bought b/c it didn't really suit their needs.

  • I want to shop too!  I am at 18 weeks and I hope to find out the baby's sex in 2 weeks.  I think after that, I will have my husband paint the nursery then start shopping around 28 weeks.  Buying stuff now seems like it would just be a lot of clutter.

I won't be buying anything until after our big u/s Thursday. I can't wait!!

  • Unless it was a killer deal, we waited until our viability date. Everything we bought early, we kept at my mom's house. I read here about girls that went crazy shopping and then lost their little ones to miscarriage and coming home to a house full of baby gear was just salt in the wound. My heart broke for them, so I made the decision to wait.

  • This is what I keep saying to everyone, I refuse to buy any big tickets items except for furniture until after our baby shower....u never ever know what you are going to get, my aunt got 2 pack n plays , and her car seat at her shower! So I will wait....then whatever you don't get you can use giftcards or gift money to purchase.
  • We've only purchased a couple outfits for LO. We will be buying her stroller this month. Everything else we're waiting to see what we receive at the shower. Although, we are receiving the crib and dresser which are only 3 years old and no recalls from my SIL.
  • We bought our stroller right after our first trimester and bought big ticket items gradually. The car seat, crib, changing table, etc. We wanted some specialty items that were expensive and felt uncomfortable putting that on our registry showing our friends and family the cost of those items. We also didn't want to wait until after our baby shower to fill in the gaps. Besides it's soooo much fun to shop!!

  • We bought the crib prob about 9 weeks ago because it was a good deal!

As for the stroller we haven't bought that yet beacuse I'm going to wait to see if I get it at my shower. If not then we buy it.

As for clothes.. well I bought alot of those but I have stopped! Smile

  • I bought some clothes, my diaper bag, and bedding. We're borrowing a crib, swing, car seat/stroller combo, pack-n-play, and bassinet from my mom.

  • If you are buying your nursery furniture yourself, I'd go ahead and start looking around. There are so many options out there! I've been seriously looking for two weeks for a crib/dresser set that I liked, was within my budget, and had great reviews and finally found one. And sometimes they take a while to come in.

As for the stroller, I like what one lady said about waiting to find one that will actually suit your needs. DH and I have chosen to go without a storller. We don't feel they are completely necessary and believe that using slings/carriers strengthens the bond between parent and child.

  • We haven't bought anything yet.  I'm looking and doing some research but we probably wont buy much until after the big u/s
  • We borrowed a crib and car seat for DS, so we have to buy new ones with this one - I'm guessing we'll do it in a few months? Definitely not until I'm past 30 weeks, just bc I don't want a crib in our bedroom for 2+ months, hee hee.

I would wait until after your shower(s) for other stuff - like a pp said, you might get big things as gifts. And definitely wait for the stroller - we got one for DS when he was 5 months or so, and were able to really research and figure out what we wanted. Also like a pp, we just wore him when we were out until he was big enough for a stroller (which worked out to be when he started getting really heavy to lug around for long periods of time). hth

  • My mom bought a car seat/stroller combo on sale when I was around 9 wks.  We heard the heartbeat at 8 wks.  We bought our crib today and I am so excited the babies room is starting to come together!

We bought the stroller last week, and I bought one crib mattress today.  We are probably going to order the cribs in the beginning of June.

I know it is early but we are having twins and these are our first so we need a ton of stuff!  If we spread out the costs I can make sure we pay cash for everything without dipping into any savings.  The pessimist in me is taping receipts to every single purchase!

  • I wouldn't buy anything until after 20 weeks and if you do keep the tags on it! You just never know!
  • We've bought one hooded towel that was too cute to resist, and a diaper bag (fine, two diaper bags). Other than that, DH's parents sent us a few onsies and blankets. We won't buy the rest until we're really close.
