Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Olivia is being put on an inhaler :(

She has a cough for 3 weeks that has persistently gotten worse to the point where this morning she puked up flem(sp?).  For instance this morning she puked 6 times b/c she got choked.  Last week she was tested for strep, her lungs were checked (they were clear) and she was tested for whooping cough.

After this mornings puking episode I called the doctor and told me to bring her in again.  They are putting her on an inhaler (on an as needed basis) and she was tested for allergies. (She did so good with the bloodwork...don't get me wrong, she cried but I took her to Cold Stone after....ice cream fixes everything!) :)

I just want her to start feeling better so I am hopeful that either the inhaler works it's magic or we find out something from the allergy tests.

We will use the inhaler for the first time tonight....do any of your LOs use one and if so how do they tolerate it?  I am dreading the holding her down part....this should be interesting!!! :(

Re: Olivia is being put on an inhaler :(

  • Hi there. I am sorry that you are upset by this, but if it helps her, great!!! My DS has asthma and has used both an inhaler and a nebulizer (still does once a day). The inhaler was good in theory, but he wasnt getting better so his Dr thought that he wasnt getting enough of the medication (he doesnt understand taking in a deep breath), so he was put back on the neb. I never had to hold him down, and you shouldnt have to. Just show your LO how to use it (you try it) and hopefully she will be okay with it. Does she have the chamber attachment? How long did they tell you to leave it to her face, or how have many breaths?

Anyways, I hope that it goes well, and that it works and she feels better soon! :)

Yes, it does have the chamber attachment.  Her pedi said to hold it to her face for 7-10 breaths.  Is that what your LO did?

  • We had to use an inhaler for a while when T was sick...with the chamber attachment.  If I recall correctly, we had to do 7-10 breaths also, to make sure he got enough of the medicine actually in his lungs.

He did surprisingly well.  Didn't love it, but seemed to "get" the idea of it.  No major issues with it.  And it helped his breathing.

I hope you have a similar experience...and that your little girl feels better!

  • We've never had to have an inhaler, but I just wanted to say hope it helps your little girl! Hopefully she's feeling better in no time!

  • AJ has been on an inhaler 2x a day since 10 months. He does much better with it now, but it can still be a battle sometimes. I find it helps if I "do" it first, to remind him how to do it and how quick an easy it is. Then he and I count to six as he breaths (in all fairness, he's not so good at the counting Wink ). He does 2 puffs for 6 breaths each. I know he understands what he's suppose to do, though, because sometimes he puts the inhaler up to my mouth and breaths quickly a few times (I do this to show him what he's going to do before I put the mask on his face). Tonight was a battle, but it's not always like that. Good luck! And I hope your DD feels better soon :(
