Anyone feed their toddler soup?

I haven't tried this yet, but am wondering how he'd like it.  I saw some fun recipes recently for kids but I wonder if he's too young at 3 to eat it.  He's fine with a spoon generally.

So is soup something you give them on a regular basis or have tried?  How does it go over?

  • Only if I strain most of the liquid out. I think he would get it everywhere if I didn't. He isn't the neatest of eaters...lol.

  • C tried tomato soup for the first time a few weeks ago and loves it, which makes me happy since he is such a picky eater.  He'll beg for it for lunch.  He also likes the hot & sour soup from PF Chang's (tried it for the first time on Valentine's Day) but doesn't like the egg drop soup.  I say give it a shot.  He may surprise you.

  • My almost 2-year-old eats soup a lot. I do veggie, tortellini, lentil, stews -- all kinds. She loves it. Sometimes I'll drain out all the broth and let her eat it with a spoon or her hands. Other times I'll feed it to her with the broth. I'm a big soup fan. Go for it!
  • I have bowls that have straws attached.  I feed them soup for lunch at least once a week.

  • DS is 2 and has loved soup since he was about 18mos.  DD is 4 and also loves soup.  We have soup & sandwiches for dinner about once a month and we just strip the kids and do bath that night ;-)
  • DS loves miso soup and has been eating it for a couple years now. Of course we used to feed it to him. He eats it on his own now and really doesn't make that much of a mess.

He used to eat other kinds of soup, too, but has become more and more picky and refuses all but miso.

  • both dc eat soup.  dd loves soup... she'll eat / drink all of the broth with a spoon and leave half of the noodles.  ds will eat the noodles and veggies and leave much of the soup, I give him less broth than her. but they both love tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. mmmm.
  • DD loves soup.

We have one of those bowls with the straw that comes out of the bottom - she uses that most of the time. And a spoon. She's a pretty neat eater. She's been eating soup since she was 1.

  • My kids both like soup and they've been eating it since they first starting eating solids for the most part. I usually use a slotted spoon so they get more "stuff" and less broth, but they're still pretty good even with soupier things.

I've never done it, but I've heard of people keeping baby cereal or instant potato flakes around so that they can use them to thicken soup for a toddler to make it more spoon-friendly.

  • Neither of my girls like soup.  Ashlyn will eat it ONLY if she has a grilled cheese sandwich to dip into it (tomato).  She won't even try chicken noodle now.  She just says "EWWWW GROSS SOUP!"  I tried giving Sydney soup last week after it cooled off to room temp.  She picked up the bowl and dumped it on her head.  Soooo.....we don't do soup for them now.
  • Where can I get these bowls with straws???
  • Yep.  Both of mine like soup!  They love it with grilled cheese, during the winter we have it at least once a week for lunch!

My friend picked them up for me at Kmart of all places.  We use them when they eat cereal for breakfast too.

My DD loves soup asks for it all the time.  She can make a bit of a mess with it, but does pretty good.  In the winter we had soup and grilled cheese for lunch, she loved that.
