How much space do I need?

Do I need to upgrade to a bigger apartment? I live in the typical 600 sq. ft. 1-BR apartment. Is anyone planning on making that work? The idea of spending more money for a bigger apartment is a bit daunting, especially when you factor in the cost of childcare as well. What's everyone doing?

  • We live in a 1 BR apt as well, though it is about 1000 sq. ft.  I'm planning on trying to make it work for us!

I'm in a place similar in size to this and we plan to make it work for the first year. We are going to try to be baby gear minimalists!

  • Ok, so I guess we definitely need to move, but we probably don't need a full 2 BR. I think my building has some 1 BR + home office/den types of places, so maybe we can move into one of those. I hate the thought of moving every year, but I also hate the thought of throwing thousands of dollars away on a place that's bigger than we need.

  • @ LMRogs -

haha us too, I think it is actually a good thing because new parents with a house (or more space in general) probably purchase a lot of things they don't end up using.

  • ha-ha! i agree with that statement.  see if you can get creative with your space.  a friend had a nook and then had these sliding doors put in to create a nursery.  i think it was originally her "eating" area.  the sliding door company did it and i know they focus on creating nurseries with limited to no apartment space.  here is their website, maybe some photos, not sure- www.nyslidingdoor.com

We live in a 1br apartment and are making it work. Not sure of exact sq footage. The bedroom is pretty small and by ny standards the living room is huge. Not doing a nursery at all. Just bought the stokke crib because its much more space efficient than the standard cribs. It will fit in our bedroom w/ our bed but will be cramped. It fits through doorways so we can wheel it in the living room too. All these stories about making little nurseries in their 1br make me want to rethink things though...hmmm.  In a year though we'll be moving.

  • Yes, we live in a 1 br. and plan to make it work for the first 6-12 months MAX.  We will be keeping things to a minimum and will possibly move some furniture around.

To best make this work, we plan to use a Pack-N-Play b/c it is an adjustable "crib" with the changing table attached.

  • We live in a 550 sq. ft 1 bedroom - bedroom is a small upstairs area - room enough for our bed and the baby crib, our dresser, and thankfully a good size closet :)

We will be using the pack 'n' play as a crib as well! With the bassinet attachment and the changer it seems ideal and I have many friends who have done the same..

My husband & I lived in a 290 sq. ft apartment for almost 8 years so we're ok with being creative space-wise, we like to joke that at least we'll be able to see the baby ALL of the time!
