bF'ing Moms? Calcium Supplement

My ob mentioned today that it may be time to take a calcium supplement because I'm still BF'ing.  Anyone else doing this?  What do you take?

Re: bF'ing Moms? Calcium Supplement

  • I started taking extra calcium while TTC, and I increased it after Kira was born because of all of my breast infections.  Calcium CITRATE is the best; stay away from calcium carbonate.  You can absorb only 350ish mg at a time, so spread it out between meals and at bedtime if you take more than that.  And it competes with iron absorption, so if you take extra iron, take them at different times.  I'm always playing with taking my minerals to get them between meals but not together -- I don't know how I did it when I had all the herbs to take while TTC too!  (Well, I guess my life was TTC then, and now my life weighs 18 pounds. ;))  BEST WISHES!!!

  • That's a good plan. :) Basically, I take calcium when I wake up and mid-afternoon, iron in the evening, and my multi-mineral at bedtime.  Vitamins are easier to take IMO because you take them with meals so I'm thinking about it more at those times! Calcium carbonate is everywhere, but calcium citrate isn't hard to find. Mine is from Vitamin Shoppe and it contains Vit D and magnesium too. Best wishes!!! :)

  • I'm taking one now because I'm lactose intolerant and don't like the soy products so especially with twins I was worried about them sucking all my calcium!  LOL  My doc recommended caltrate and I take it twice a day.
  • yuppers... all of those plus Omega 3.

My doc wants me to stay up on my Calcium/Vit D due to the fact so many forms of cancer run in my family.

oh yeah and I don't drink milk... unless it's with oreos!

  • FYI, Caltrate may be calcium carbonate, which humans minimally absorb. My ND told me to give anything with calcium carbonate to my dog since it's bone and shell ;)  -- fortunately, this was something I had heard before I started seeing her and thus I didn't have any. It is in many multi-vitamins, unfortunately. Calcium citrate is best, and it's not hard to find. :)

  • Ugh, I guess I should be taking it... There's a strong history of osteoporosis in my family.  Sad
