Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Am I creating a monster?

I started to worry last night that we're setting ourselves up for failure.  I nurse DS, we swaddle him and then put him to bed.  He's usually awake, but he's swaddled so he doesn't move too much and falls asleep after no more than 5 minutes.

I worry that when he's not being swaddled we'll have a hard time getting him to go to sleep.  That he'll want to move around, crawl, play, etc.  Is it too late to start a bedtime routine?  He nurses for almost an hour before he goes to bed, so adding in book, rocking, etc will have him up later.  We rush as it is to get everything done before he goes down.

  • I worry about this too, but not the swaddling part. We deswaddled early because DS always got his arms out no matter how tight! I wish I would have known about the woombie then!  Anyway, He always nurses to sleep and I know that is gonna be a problem!

  • Babies are flexible.  You can always start a different routine when the time comes.  He may cut down that nursing routine himself.  My baby used to do longer sessions before bed but just doesn't any more.
  • No it's not too late.

Start by only swaddling him at night, (eliminating daytime swaddling).  Then when he gets used to not always being swaddled, reduce the number of nights that he's swaddled ... when he's down to zero nights being swaddled, he should be in some sort of routine.

I used to do this - nurse her, swaddle her, put her in the crib slightly awake and she'd fall asleep within a few minutes.. At about 4.5 months she started to hate the swaddle. She would struggle to get her arms out and cry. So we stopped swaddling and kept everything else the same. For the first week it took her longer to fall asleep (like 30 minutes instead of 5-10), but now she's back to normal. She also woke up a lot more during the night for the first week and half, but I think we've overcome that now too.
