Facial Numbness??

I'm 38 weeks and yesterday I experienced some numbness on the left side of my tongue, I just assumed I had scalded my taste buds with some hot coffee and thought nothing of it. Then right before bed I got this awful pain in my left jaw and behind my left ear. I took some tylenol and had hubby rub my neck and head just assuming it was stress and anxiety. Then much to my surprise I woke up this morning and was having trouble feeling part of the left side of my mouth and felt twitching in my upper lip. I went immediately to my 'What to Expect' book and found that my symptoms matched those of Bell's Palsy (although minor, no major facial drooping or paralysis) but of course I had a total breakdown this morning.

Anyone else experience this? I have a dr. appt this morning to get checked out, but I'm an emotional (and hormonal) basket-case today.

  • Have you been sensitive to loud sounds in one of your ears? I have bell's palsy...the first thing that I really noticed was the right side of my tongue going numb. It came on really fast for me, the next day the whole right side of my face stopped working. I went to L&D because I have pre-e so thought maybe it was related, but nope, just another thing going wrong for me. After they diagnosed me with bell's palsy I read about your ear being sensitive and I had been experiencing that for several days before other symptoms. I would definitely get it checked out, because if it is bell's palsy the sooner you start medication the better off you are. I hope for your sake it's nothing, being this pregnant is bad enough, top it off with drooling food out of your mouth when you eat! Good luck.

I do recall some sensitivity in my left ear yesterday!! I saw the dr. this morning and they confirmed that I have a very mild case of Bell's Palsy. They don't know what causes it exactly but they prescribed some cortizone steriods to begin taking immediately to hopefully prevent it from getting any worse and to speed recovery. Thanks for the well wishes!
