Babies: 0 - 3 Months

weight lost in 1st week ?

I took DS to his first doctors appointment today and they said he has lost a total of 10% of his weight since being born.  I know that babies that are BF tend to be different and the lose of weight isn't that big of a deal but they are making us go back for a weight check on Friday so I was curious how much your LO lost. TIA

How much weight did your Newborn lose between being born and your first doctors appointment?

Matthew was born weighing 7lbs and 15 1/2 ounces and when we left the hospital 2 days later he weighed 7lb & 8 ounces. Our appointment was 4 days later and he weighed 8lbs & 6 ounces.

  • We had our first appt at 6 days and he was past his birth weight. He is FF.

  • I was breastfeeding then and DD lost 8oz from birth (7lbs 13oz). We supplemented with formula and also had to go back 4 days later for a weight check and she was back to her discharge weight.
  • At our hospital if they lose more than 10%, they take it really seriously.  DS lost over 13% in 4 days and I was forced to give formula (he was also later hospitalized due to jaundice)
  • DD was 8lb 3oz at birth at 8lb at discharge 2 days later.  She was 8lb 1oz at her first pedi appt at 5 days old.  Her doc was pretty impressed that she hadn't lost much weight, especially since she is BF.  At 2 weeks she was up to 8lb 9oz.
  • Lo was born at 7 lbs 7 oz. She was 7.2 when we left the hospital. 4 days later she weighed 6.13. Pedi is having us supplement with as much formula as she wants afters she feeds for 15 minutes on eack breast.
  • we EBF and she was up a pound at her first appointment. She's a porker.
  • My DS was 7.5 at birth, 6.13 when we left the hospital and 7.9 a week later!

  • DS was 9lbs 4oz at birth. By his first appt, which was 6 days later, he was down to 8lbs 7oz. By the next week, 5 days later, he was back to 9lbs 2oz!

Bigger babies also tend to lose more weight than smaller ones.

    At birth - 9 lb. 8 oz.
    At discharge (day 3) - 8 lb. 8 oz.
    At 1-week appointment - 8 lb. 15 oz.

So between born and first doctor's appointment, it was about 10%

  • dd was born at 6lbs 3oz

    at 4 days she was 6lbs 5oz

    at 10 days she was 6lbs 15oz

my milk came in on day 2

  • On day 2 she was down 5 %, day 3 down 8%, day 4 down 9.8% (the day we went home from the hospital.

On day 6 we went to the pedi and she had gained 4 oz so was only down 6% total. My c section and recover has delayed my milk supply so they are having us supplement with formula until it comes in.
