Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Monkey Harness

We will be flying to Colorado in July.  I am concerned that DS won't be happy in his stroller the entire time in the airport, so I thought about one of those monkey harnesses.  I want to get one now and practice using it around the block or something.  I have never seen one used in real life, but have seen pics of kids on here with them.  I described it to my mom and she said...A Leash?!  It is for his safety and freedom, not because I don't want to watch him.  Do you think people will be too judgy?

Re: Monkey Harness

  • we have 1 for each vehicle.  We don't use it often, but used it yesterday when we were at a play area that was too close to a busy road for my comfort.  I really don't think it matters what other people think.  DS being safe is more important to me.  DS actually doesn't mind it at all and loves his "money" lol

  • Do you seriously care if people judge you? You're the mother. Who cares if people judge that. There is nothing wrong with using a harness.

  • We use the monkey LEASH with our son.  It's for times when he doesn't want to sit in the stroller, but he can't really roam free.

We  use it at the mall a lot and a few people have actually asked us where to find one.

Like you, when we first used it I was nervous people would be a judgey.  I got over it.  I put my kid on a leash, judge me for it, I don't care.

That's all I needed!  I just had never seen any used around here.  I am way to shy to be a trendsetter!

  • DS has the monkey backpack and he doesn't mind it.  I see them all the time where I live (in all the different animal variations).  It's kind of dangerous to just let DS walk around "by self" around here.  I'm always worried that he'll dart out into the street and the "leash" gives me a little bit of control if he refuses to hold my hand.  I do feel a bit like I'm out walking my kid, but I can live with that, especially when the alternative is the risk of him getting hurt.  I used to be anti-leash before I had a toddler, but it just makes sense in certain situations.  And I like the backpack more than the wrist leashes that I've seen.

Your kid, your business. Who cares what other people want to judge? Let's see them be all judgy when their toddler gets lost in a crowd of people.

My nephew has one, and I used it with him the other day at the mall. At first it felt weird like I was walking a dog. But soon, it came in really handy when he didn't want to listen and tried to run away from us. I will be getting one when we go to pow wows this summer. Willis is just way to mobile, and I am not about to lose my child because of my pride.

  • I used one with dd when I went on a cruise last november, and it worked great. I haven't had to use it since though. I think it's a good idea for a crowded airport. Just don't do this to your kid  Wink:

  • Well yes, people will be judgey, but who cares? I was one of those judgey-judgerson's myself until I found myself with a child who gets into everything and has holy tantrums when he is forced to be restrained. I guess that's karma flipping me the bird. Anyways, we'll probably suck it up and get one too. People who judge just don't know.

    HAAAAAAAAAHAHAHA! Sweet boots!

  • I use a leash and it's not even covered up by a cutesy little stuffed animal backpack.  We have one made by Munchkin that can either be used with the harness or just used as a bracelet that I paid a whole whopping $5 for at WalMart.  But...I'm a mean mommy and I don't care what people think as long as me and DS are happy.
  • I plan on getting two for this summer, we live on a lake and while I will be with them all the time, sometimes they are quick and if they are both going in opposite directions I would rather be able to keep them close to me, then have them in the water!
