Parenting after a Loss

Do you know anything about Menier's disease?

I think DH has it. He has had vertigo all his life but was always told he did not have Menier's Disease. Lately he has been having horrible dehabilitating dizzy spells. He literally laid on the couch all evening and did not move. Sometimes it gets so bad that he vomits. I just want him better. Do you know anything about it? Anything that can be done for it? I'm forcing him to go to the doctor ASAP.

  • my grandma had it and went deaf in one ear... the vertigo subsided as she aged though... she was 82 when she died and hadnt had much issue since her sixties.... I dont know too much about it as I was so little then...

I also had a friend who dated a guy with it.... he was on meds that stopped the vertigo but also had profound hearing loss in one ear....

  • My mom has it. There's a lot of treatments but no cure. She has surgery a long time ago but they don't o the procedure anymore. There are things like balance therapy and certain medications that help. She also was put on a low sodium diet because it helps restrict fluid build up in the ear which causes dizziness. Also, she found out allergies can trigger some symptoms. She was tested and found she has sensitivities to lots of foods she used to eat every day. Her diet has changed and it has helped. Definitely send DH to get checked. He probably should see an ENT if he can. If you have more questions I might be able to answer them. My mom has been dealing with this for nearly 30 years. ETA my mom has mild hearing loss which was only recently discovered so the Dr can't confirm it isn't just from getting older. Also, it's believed to be genetic but there are lots of people who don't have a family history of it. If a Dr blows DH off because of lack of family history, seek another opinion.

  • Sorry I can't help much. I have an elderly friend who has it, but that's about all I know. He will occasionally get terrible dizzy spells, but I'm not sure what else is involved.

ETA: I don't know if the deafness is involved, but this friend is also almost completely deaf. His hearing aids don't seem to help him much; it takes extra effort to make him hear you.

  • My FIL has it.  I know he isn't allowed table salt.  I can ask him if you'd like.
